Traditional Scottish ales, these beers focus on malt color and flavor with hops being almost imperceptible. Aged in American Red Oak our Shillings finish crisp and a wee bit sweet. Our Scottish ale is on the lighter end of the spectrum with our 36 Shilling being more robust and darker.

Poured from a can a beautiful, dark red/amber with a nice frothy head that lingered and faded to very nice lacing. Aroma was malty and sweet with a slight smokey/oak hint. Taste included sweet maltiness, caramel and hint of oak aging. Body and density was above average. Overall, I liked this Scottish ale! Too bad it’s not sold locally.

Aroma is burnt caramel, metallic, somewhat buttery, maybe some earthy hops. Appearance is brown red, mostly clear, light tan head. Taste is burnt caramel, somewhat floral, nutty, malty, toffee, slightly tart, light and different. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, burnt caramel aftertaste. Overall, it’s not as horrible as the ratings indicate.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 9/16/2016. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness/toast, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Okay aromas with balanced dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; and solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, apple, light nuttiness/toast, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, dark fruit, light nuttiness, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/grainy mouthfeel that is good. A bit thin and stale feeling, but not watery. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a decent Scottish ale. All around solid complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A bit too thin and yeasty, but a solid style example. An enjoyable offering.

Skyview (6093) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - SEP 5, 2016
Picked up a single 12-oz can from Riley’s Wines of the World in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear amber brown colored brew with a fast dissipating off-white head that leaves behind a thin ring. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, a hint of honey and a touch of floral hops. Taste is light to medium bodied with flavors of sweet caramel malt, a touch of downstairs cellar and a wee bit of honey. Finish is semi-sweet, very low bitterness and a sweet caramel malt aftertaste that quickly disappears. A lighter scottish ale compared to most other overall.

I love Blatz. This stuff not so much. Forego this foofy little drink and give it to your “sophisticated” acquaintances, and you can watch them with your bloodshot eyes and think: “What a bunch of idiots!” Secure your place in the pantheon of Beer legends (Val Blatz…..Joseph Schlitz…. Billy Carter) and keep this stuff away from your yapper…..

Poured from a 12 oz can. They got the color right but to transparent. Aroma of malt was very weak, taste was almost nonexistent. This beer had nothing going for it. Very disappointing Scotch Ale.

Draft. Brown/amber with thin beige head. Aroma of light malt sweetness, caramel, and toasted malt. Light body, caramel, toasted malt, medium sweetness, light metallic note, and a malty sweet finish. A little too thin on the body and more of an amber ale.
