609 yen for 10oz at Bungalow. Nice dark black pour with reddish tints around the edges of the glass & a thick creamy tan head-a great looking beer. The aroma is chocolate with toffee notes. Wow, quite a rich beer. Thick, viscous oily mouthfeel with a strong toffee, figs, plum & chocolate taste. This is the nicest beer I have had from Kinshachi. Really good stuff. I may be overrating this as it was far beyond my expectations... I need to drink it again side by side with a different top stout to judge it accurately... Wombata (625) - Kobe, JAPAN - SEP 4, 2014
Tap at Marciero
Aroma: Pear, licorice, coffee, dark chocolate
Flavor: Pear, licorice, coffee, dark chocolate turns to more pear on mid-palate and to licorice on the finish.
Comment: Multiple, shifting flavors. TimE (5827) - Tokyo, JAPAN - DEC 25, 2008
Pitch black color with nice dark brown head. Nose is all about huge bitter dark chocolate with faint hints of espresso. Med-full bodied, but a bit one-dimensional bitter dark chocolate notes in mouth, but some espresso and nuttiness is there as well. Well balanced and the finish has a long bitterness that I love in Imperial Stouts. Not going to win for depth, but very enjoyable. KyotoLefty (10265) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 12, 2009
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2009 Bottle from Yamaoka.
Creamy aroma of burnt wood, smoke, dark chocolate, a bit of coffee, and roasted malts. Solid black with a great tan head. Very smooth, powerful flavor, burnt, with coffee more than chocolate, wood and smoke and alcohol. Plus some cream in there too. Very smooth and thick and creamy. Sweetness and burntness balance each other well. Not quite imperial, but tasty as hell.

On tap at Beer Circus, Nagoya. Black with a lacing, creamy, light brown head. Good roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Chocolate, a touch of vanilla, some tartness and good roasted flavours. Rich and full-bodied. A very complex chocolate stout.

Black colored with little beige head. Dark chocolate aroma in aroma, roastiness and mildly bitter hops also here. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is more hopped with mild chocolate, roastiness and licorice here too. Aftertaste dries, alcohol covered almost totally. I like this, mix of chocolate and hops. Draught at Bungalow. Deep black, ruby notes. Ruby, tan head with decent lacing. Sweet toffee with roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Flavour has huge chocolate malt with some nice dark frut flavours. Good balance of roasted and sweet flavours. Best I’ve had from this brewery. GenDV138 (7285) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - DEC 13, 2014
Small glass on draft at Beer House Craft Man. Black with tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, oats, caramel. Tastes of dark and milk chocolates, roast, oats, light dark fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. mrjez (622) - Osaka, JAPAN - MAY 19, 2016
Found old notes from early 2015, no recollection if tap or bottle. Very dark pour, near black, low tan head. Very chocolatey aroma, roasty, perhaps anise or coffee underneath. Rich chocolate taste, dark fruits like date or fig, roasted malt. Very syrupy, some lingering bitterness, slightly dry at the end. Nice indeed. Marc (486) - Yokosuka, JAPAN - DEC 25, 2008
Deep dark brown/black with a thin tan hat. Creamy dark chocolates nose with traces of toffee, chalky figs, and the slightest touch of cinnamon. Firm mouthfeel with dry coco, bitter bakers chocolate, figs, molasses, and hints of coffee bean. Finishes earthy and herbal with black and roasted malts prevailing.
Fairly understated for the style. Bad? No. Different? Yes.
