Oishii desu (this is delicious)! Kirin’s most flavorsome brand has a potent aroma of licorice and dark fruit and a taste to match. Further characterized by sweet and rummy flavors, this sticky, full bodied, chewy brew finishes with lots of alcoholic flavors and a very warming feel. The brewery’s best and possibly the entire country’s as well.

IslandHaole (1299) - Misawa, JAPAN - NOV 5, 2005
A near black, mahogany, opaqe brew with a foamy mocha head and nice lacing.Thick malts, soy sauce, molasses, sweet-tarts, mineral salts, there’s a lot going on here. A warming middle with roastyness towards the finish. Nice feel. A tasty stout, not one-dimensional like Asahi’s stout offering. Probably the best beer made by one of the big macro brewers.

Dark brown with a chestnut head. Fat molasses, coffee, burnt caramel and dark fruit nose warmed by a moderate amount of alcohol. A little thinner in the mouth then expected but very nice with all the stuff in the nose with strong warm espresso notes. Finishes roasty.

Slightly aged bottle. Lovely, shiny black with a bubbly, high, tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and a bit of soy sauce. Creamy and smooth. flavor of chocolate and cafe au lait, with a well-managed bitterness, and berries. Very smooth, creamy mouth. Well done beer. Their best by miles.

DarkMagus (560) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 16, 2007
Monstrous light brown head. Pitch black with barely discernable ruby highlights. Sweet roasted malt aroma with hints of coffee. Rich, dark-roasted malt flavors--a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Hops, cocoa, coffee, burnt toast, and roasted nuts are also present. Strangely "salty". Heavy, thick, oily mouthfeel with a nice dry but sticky finish, leaving behind a bittersweet aftertaste. By far the best Kirin beer I’ve had. And perhaps the finest offering from a Japanese macrobrewery.

Deep dark brown coloured body with deep oily black glow and a thin, two centimetre light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, raisins, figs and a lot of molasses - very nice compared to the light lagers. Medium-bodied; Deep roasty flavour with a lot of sweetness, but not much body, showing raisins and figs the strongest and the slightest hint of soy sauce and vanilla. Aftertaste is deep and strong with some alcohol coming through, a bit of metal and bitterness, but a nice solid beer. Overall, a good beer considering the options! I sampled this 33 cL can purchased from Takashimya Grocery/Department Store in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan on 12-August-2010 drank right in the city centre of Tokyo.

Small dark brown head. Almost completely opaque black body, dark brown at edges. Sweet perfumed licorice aroma. Sweet earthy licorice taste with mint notes. Dryish throughout. Dry minty burnt aftertaste. Quite nice. (0.334l bottle.)
