Zwart & Straf Winterbier

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a dark brown to black color and a large cream colored head with a lot of bubbles. In the aroma are tones of black chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts and liquorice. The taste is light sweet with a nice bitterness from the dark chocolate in the end. The finish is dry and a light bitterness is noticable for a while. A strong ale which reminds me of a stout, very well done.

Bottle 33cl. Deep black with a huge light brown head. Aroma has spices? Can’t really pin down what it makes me think of. Be prepared for a surprise when you take your first sip. There’s alcohol in it’s taste, but it’s very spicy too. Very special, but not sure if I like it.

Bottle @ home. Dark brown to black colour with a large off-white head. Smells sweet, liquorice, roasty. Tastes sourish, roasty, liquorice. Medium body, medium to heavy carbo.

Plum and cola and molasses, salty brine and char. The licorice / anise character is well integrated. Medium-full body, medium carbonation, sweet front and middle, medium acid, medium to low bitterness. Malt is somewhat simple caramel syrup, and the molasses and vegemite resemblance is there for me but it’s not off-putting. Warming alcohol and an airy, bubbly, bitter finish. Good shape, nicely carbonated and balanced well, but not the most expressive malt and yeast.

Head is initially large, frothy/fizzy, brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (chocolate syrup, molasses, roasted grain), with notes of prune, date, burnt honey, fennel/anise, clove, alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Full body, syrupy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. A pretty good rendition...I wish there was more brightness in the nose, though...it’s just too heavy brown-fruity without much to soften and make it pop. Good flavor balance for the style, but still no rocking me hard there either. Good but not great.

Poured deep dark brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma of roast malt, sweet dark fruit. Full body, flavour as the aroma, quite bitter, candy sweet and vinous.

tricksta_p (4747) - Steenwijk, NETHERLANDS - OCT 4, 2014
Aroma of dark malt, bread, caramel, dried fruits, sugar, liquorice, herbs, some chocolate. Flavour is quite sweet, some alcohol, with a chocolate sweet finish. Not my kind of beer, but well crafted for the style.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2014 On tap 5 oz. pour at Max’s in the Fell’s Point district, Baltimore, MD. Nearly opaque, rusty brown w a creamy khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of blackberry, raspberry, dates toffee and yeast. Taste of chocolate, raspberries, dates, toffee and yeast. Light/medium body and medium carbonation with a thin mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
