Zwart & Straf Winterbier

Lore (2671) - Budapest, HUNGARY - MAY 15, 2016
dark reddish brown colour, one inch creamybeige-ish head; aroma of dried plum and figs, anise, cocoa powder, earthy and floral notes; taste of dried plum, raisins, anise, some chocolate apple and herbal liqueur; almost like a quadrupel - really good!

Bottle. Wait, the brewers’ _aim_ is to "promote Turnhout as a world wide centre of the playing card industry"? Pretty much black with a cm of tan head that lasts well. Oranges and lemon stick out in the aroma with slightly funky dough, licorice, prunes and spices less unexpected. Not that sweet but moderately doughy with plenty of prunes and other dried fruit. Subdued chocolate. Quite heavily spiced with some citrus peel too. Alcohol sticks out a bit at the end. Interesting beer - can’t see a date but feels like it could come together a bit over 18 months or so. At the moment things are complex but not well integrated.

From a 330ml bottle on 19/4/2016. Pours an extremely dark brown with a biggish uneven head. The nose features dark fruit, booze and Belgian yeast. Taste wise, it’s quite sweet and very plummy, with some raisins, with hints of spice and chocolate. It’s earthy, a touch sharp and has the typical Belgian yeastiness that you’d expect. The texture is thick with slightly fizzy carbonation. A decent, boozy sipper which lacks a bit of subtlety and refinement for mine. Just not the type of beer that blows my hair back.

Overall: Sweet dark bread, licorice, some Madiera.
Note: Bottle 750 ml at home. Reviewed 2016-04-16.

330ml bottle bought at Craftissmo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Looks: Translucent deep ruby red with a thin traces of dirt-like yeast sediments; Half finger head and crumpety light beige foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Very good sticky lacing with slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet rich dark malt, with strong caramel, toffee, coffee, strong cream, dark fruits, sugar, very light alcohol, light bread, strong Bel yeast and thin grass.

Taste: Mid to strong sweet dark malt, with caramel, toffee, creamed coffee, moderate alcohol, very light liquorices, strong sugar, Bel yeast, herbs, light lemon and light bitter hops.

Body: Full body. Quite thick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Fairly good dark maltyness in a silky smooth background. Lots of creamy coffee and sweet alcohol, feels a bit likes a coffee liqueur. Strong caramel and toffee. Notable sweetness but refreshing and not cloying. Very Bel yeasty, herbal and light liquorices with light lemon to round. Nothing overpowering and very neat!

Hoppiness: Thin grass in nose. Light lemon and herbal grass in taste; Bitterness from herbs and liquorices for an abrupt, fair astringent sweet coffee finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Creamy and sweet boozy to mouth.

Comments: A decent take on Coffee-ish dark ale, Belgian style. Not in the same league as Struise Pannepot, as this one lacks the spicy fruity characters of the former, or the rich creaminess of Chimay Blue. It has done enough for my taste, but not quite to the next level. Very good but not great.

Poca schiuma, gradazione alcoolica corretta, sentori di liquirizia, lieve caffe, frutta secca. Ottima con formaggi, non eccessivamente saporiti.

Japalo (1874) - DENMARK - MAR 14, 2016
Bottle @home with Erik. One finger dark brown clear. Alcoholic roasted coffee toasted. Strong alcoholic but well hidden. Dry but with hint of sweetness. Great imperial Belgian ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Color marrone chiaro con densa schiuma. Al naso e al palato, malto, frutta secca e liquirizia. Carbonatazione forse un po’ eccessiva.
