Our dark beer has an original extract of 12.4% and contains 5.4% alcohol by volume. It is brewed entirely from dark malt with little hops using bottom fermenting yeast according to an old, monastery recipe. The result is a delicious beer with a full-bodied, malty taste.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with airy but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of malt and caramel with some sparse hoppy notes. Bitter, hoppy flavour with roasty and sweetish touches of caramel malt and a hint of fruit. Mildly bitter finish. Decent.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2007 Draught at the brewpub. Hazy brown coloured. Very malty aroma. Soft, sweet and malty. Notes of chocolate. Well balanced and pleasant.

Draught: Poured a reddish brown with off white head. Not very much aroma to be senced. The flavor was tea, bark, and leafy malt.

Draft at the abbey. Poured nicely but seemed a thin mouthfeel for a dunkel. Hints of chocolate and malt were nice.

Dark malty aroma; some tootsie roll like chewy chocolate. Deep brown color with soft off-white head. Overall light flavor with a touch of roastiness from the dark malt, very clean almost steril (thanks again reinheitsgebot). Notes: Bottle found at one of the local schnapps stores in Berkastel-Kues

Sampled at Thomas W, thanks. Smal light brown head. Perfect red-amber color. Very good maltarom. No sweetness and big drinkabillity.

33cl from tab at the brauhaus. Have a dark brown colour with a thin head. Aroma is caramel, coffee and toffee. Average carbonation and medium body. Taste is bitter with some sweet notes and a long and bitter coffee aftertaste. Overall, a very nice beer.

Toffee color. Big tan/khaki head with a bit of lacing as it slowly dies down. Huge acetic, sour aroma. And nail polish and malt. That sourness comes through slightly in the mouth as well. So much so that it overpowers the hint of malt that is in there. Not good. Can’t finish this one unfortunately.

Bottle from my Secret Santa's package, thank you Beerhunter 111! Pours brown, some beige foam at first but reduces quickly. Nose has some light caramel, wet baked bread and berry jam without sweetness. Taste is quite acidic, pretty tart. Not really what I expected actually, possibly gone sour and not intended to be like this. Residual sugars are gone, light caramel and bready malts. Sour linger lasting into aftertaste, dry bready finish.

Prefer this over the helles even though it is less complex. Just beautiful little flavors. Sweet, iron, chalk. Nice.
