TAR (2802) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - DEC 14, 2011
Draft at Klosterbrau Bamberg: Eclipsed chestnut. Creamy and persistent light-beige head. Intriguing, potently earthy nose of rustic dark malts, cheese curd, shoe polish, yogurty yeast, rum, leather and black plum. Firm carbonation. Deeply earthy and mineralic with a stiff punch of coffee grounds and a metallic twinge of roast, yet ever so delicate with a gradual development of malty depth and palate-caressing softness. Predominantly dry malt features a tasty light nuttiness and treacle toffee. Chocolate cake lusciousness beautifully adorns the staunch foundation of appetizing minerals. Ends with a mineral and dry chocolate blend with shades of cocoa swirled with lingering rustic, yogurty yeastiness. A rare example where rustic idiosyncrasies are so adeptly juggled with a thoroughly fulfilling malty fullness. An intriguing, highly characterful Schwarzbier.

BREWMUSKCLES (2759) - New Jersey, USA - DEC 11, 2011
on draft late last spring at Hallo Berlin 10th ave Manhattan NYC. A toasted malt taste perhaps a little burnt hay kernels with a touch of licorice. moderate somewhat slick body with a nice fresh malt taste. a tingly bitter taste and sensation at the finish. a bit of sweetness for balance. good for the autumn and great with the good German plates served there.

Braudog (6907) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - DEC 11, 2011
Draft at the brewpub. Very roasty aroma and drinks almost with a bit of charcoal, which sounds worse than it is. If you’re in the mood for a toasty one, this is smooth and quite drinkable. (#4386, 12/2/2011)

Bottle from Fränkische Botschaft, Berlin. Very dark ruby, quite lively. Smoky aroma. Deep, complex flavour. Sweetness, dark berries, wood, smoke. True craftsmanship, I hope to enjoy this on tap!

50 cl bottle @ Kahdet Kasvot, Tampere.
Pours dark ruby red colour with medium head. Aroma of roasted malts, lots of grain, caramel, grass and earth. Flavour of stuffy malts, caramel, light fruits, grain and dry hay. Very stuffy palate, full-bodied.

LIVE RATING: 500ml bottle at home, gift from friend. Pours deep brown with a handsome pale brown head that disappears with only a little lace. Rich malt and grain in aroma. Then rich blend of malts, oats, herbs, smoky touches and some berry sweetness harmonise in-the-mouth to give a not-too-sweet blend - aftertaste is somewhat drier, and a zingy mouthfeel is afforded by the medium-bodied liquid. Very pleasant, would make a good ’finisher’ pint.

Clear dark brown with a small baige head. Aroma is toasted malt with a little sweet caramel. Refreshing well carbonated palate, roasted bitterness and a light caramel sweetness.

(Rating #3843)

ganache (6089) - New Jersey, USA - SEP 20, 2011
Swing-top bottle best by 02.03.12. Nose is sweet with caramel, brown sugar, and nuts. Roast is mild. Dark brown/black with a light brown, rocky head. Taste is dryish with mild fruitiness and a little lovely ashy mocha that intensifies to medium by the end, into the roasty aftertaste. Thin light body with lightly earthy chocolate and mild coffee touches, though a little more toward the end. Airy and delicate, definitely enjoyable but not in line with my image of a Schwarzbier.
