Bomber purchased from Whole Foods. I rated the IPA earlier and I’m again surprised this is the 2nd rating for something I bought at WF. This beer has a really off aroma and taste- its the same (astringent?) taste I had on the IPA, but more or worse on this effort. Its clear and nicely filtered but man there is something really not enjoyable from what could be considered a Hop Monster of a beer. Hopefully they keep tweaking things and this beer raises to the Cali DIPA level.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip. Golden orange with a moderate white head that quickly dissipates and laces the glass. Aroma is rather fruity with pine in the background. Aggressively bitter, lively on the palate. A little alcohol comes through.

Very tasty and citrusy double IPA. Refreshing, strong taste (and high alcohol content) this is a beer with personality that is excellent on a warm day. ---Rated by Belgiandean

captivaboy (42) - Captiva, Florida, USA - AUG 23, 2017
Initial malt but quickly balanced by pine, mild resin and hops. Dry finish, not sweet and, unfortunately not floral. Very nice but not the wow factor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I hesitated ordering this so early in the evening because, at 9%, there might be regrets later in the evening. I also hesitated ordering a second for the same reasons. But with a DIPA as good as Hoptologist, you just have to escort caution out the door and drink like you're twenty years younger. Tarry pine is most pronounced on the nose, reminiscent of wreaths or snowy stands of evergreens; however, grapefruit and some toffee are also present. With the first sip, you notice more pine from all of the hops, and this lingers just long enough for a crisp, bitter finish. With a second and third sip, you notice browned butter too, as well as a chewy mouthfeel. You have to search for the citrus, but it's there, on the fourth and fifth sips. And as for the twelfth plus sips, regrets be damned! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
