Attention citizens of America! The reds are among us! An Imperial Red was spotted in the vicinity of Knee Deep Brewing Co. It has disguised itself with a heavy dose of hops in the kettle and even more in the fermenter. To further allude detection, it has added a slight spice from rye. Do NOT be fooled. This is not a west coast style IPA. This a delicious and extremely dangerous Imperial Red. Do not try to approach it by yourself. McCarthy’s Bane is here and very real. If you share this beer with your comrades, be prepared to find your name on a list in McCarthy’s briefcase. It may be on draft in select quality beer establishments around you. Be advised! McCarthy’s Bane is a malty, somewhat spicy, yet very hoppy brew that is dry hopped and brewed with huge amounts of Pacific Northwest hops. Yes, we use rye in this amazing brew.

I love rye. It gets a bit hidden behind the big malt aroma and hop, but I think you’ll get some if its earthiness if you pair it with the right food. I like this beer with lamb and some funky cheeses, not so much with vinegar based sauces.

Draft at the brewery. Strong malty nose with a ton of sugar and toffee with a light hop presence. Taste is malt forward initially with a firm hop bitterness. Dry finish. Decent.

From bomber to glass. Aroma of rich biscuit malt. Some slight spice from the rye, but had hoped for more. Pours an amber-chestnut with a light tan head. Taste is rich malt with slight chocolate. Alcohol is present. Hops are restrained with grass, slight citrus and a little earth. A little "mole sauce" on the back half. Moderate low bitterness belies the IBUs. Missing a little something.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a lasting creamy head that leaves excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel, pine and coffee. Hides the alcohol well. Medium bitter and lightly sweet. Average carbonation, medium body, and a long bitter finish, bitter taste into the far finish.

(Rating #5486)

My Bottom Line:
Toasted bread and fruity caramel support coniferous hop resins in this rich and flavorful strong ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam settles atop the mahogany gown.
-Though intense, the flavor profile is rather balanced.
-Sweetness levels are kept in check.
-The toastiness is very enjoyable.
-This was a nice surprise! The flavor profile is a cousin of Arrogant Bastard, I would say.

Bottle. Amber. Pine. Citrus. Heavy pine taste. Pretty heavy thick mouthfeel. Creamy/syrup. Decent, but not as good as I hoped it would be. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Brownish amber with off white head. Aroma is sweet malt, citrus and piney hops. Taste is extremely piney, borderline cleaning product. Citrus and caramel notes support with a slightly roasty finish. Thickish syrupy palate with moderate carbonation. Not my favorite offering from Knee Deep.

Pours a reddish amber-brown with a one finger tan head with good lacing. Aroma is of pine, sweet malts, rye, citrus, caramel, bready malts, and some toffee. Taste is about the same as the aroma with maybe a little more hoppyness. Has a medium full body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a slighty dry, moderately bitter, long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, complex strong ale.

Bottle shared by Moose. This was much later in the evening so my notes are fairly thin. Tasty with some sweet malt, resinous hops and lingering bitterness. Good.
