COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A delightful Scottish beer inspired by a brewing book from 1847 where there is a story about a beer that is clear and very brisk, and, consequently, very agreeable to the palate. Our modern interpretation of this beer uses four different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley). Hops are added in small quantities in two stages to ensure that the malt character typical of Scottish ales is not overwhelmed.

Clear, dark amber beer. Malt and strong caramel in the aroma. Taste is also a malt/caramel mix and a toasty edge, but not as strong as I expected from the flavour. It’s almost refreshing though a touch "thin" for want of a better word. Quite drinkable though.

Bottle. Dark brown ale with a very lively and thick off white head. Nose is asparin, some lemons. Taste is a bit bland. There’s a hint of chocolate, some asprin, a touch of tea... blergh.

Draught at The Archerfield Walled Garden Brewery, Dirleton, E.Lothian. Dark brown with cream head. Quite a malty, toffee’d beer, some sweet fruitiness, peachy, caramel notes. Never really gets bitter for me but a reasonable beer.

Cask at the Great British Beer Festival 2017. Pours dark bronze maroon brown with a lasting bubbly off-white to beige head. Aroma of toffee, malt, chocolate, dark fruit and hop. Medium plus sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation.

Draught (Crown, Oxford)
Dark, but a bit flat. Sweet treacley aroma. Flat palate. Taste is sweet, treacley, and dull. Anna described it as "freshly squeezed treacleberries".

Cask @ The Windsor Castle, Kensington, London. Clear, dark brown body with a medium sized, dense, beige head. Aroma has toffee, toast and fruit-caramel. Flavor is smooth, mild roasted medium sweet malt, caramel and medium bitterness. Medium body and average, nice aftertaste. A fine and smooth ale somewhere in between a bitter and a mild.

Cask at the Vine, Wombourne. Pours very dark brown with a small head. Aroma is malty chocolate and red wine fruits. Taste has coffee and chocolate malt with vinous dark fruits on the finish.

Donkerbruin rode kleur. Aroma van caramel, gebrande mout. Smaakt dun en waterig. bitterzurig, vaag mout. Onaangename bitterzure afdronk. Ik vind er niks aan, misschien een slechte fles?

3.2
Heidbummer (881) - SCOTLAND - FEB 21, 2016
Pours dark, decent tight head. Promises a lot on the nose: caramel and hops. Drinks a bit disappointing as sweeter than it should be. Lots of malt and caramel but not enough bitterness for me. Easy drinking. A decent session beer but for the sweetness which is just a touch too prominent.
