Red, as you'd expect, with a toffee head. It has a caramel character, slightly hopped, almost nutty at the finish. An excellent amber. Rballs01 (282) - Madison, New Jersey, USA - SEP 8, 2005
Had this Hawaiian red ale in a Japanese restaurant in Maui. The atmosphere of this Maui-pad contributed greatly toward my love for this beer. The waitress placed it on the table and the color was radiant. Bright red, slight maltiness, nice full flavor. A great local beer.

On tap at Yard House Waikiki 201214. Great flavour in this beer. Super malty with biscuit, caramel and toffee flavours coming through. True to its name this beer pours copper red with a light tan head. While the aroma is moderate the flavour more than makes up for it. George999 (455) - Colorado, USA - NOV 1, 2014
Red crystal clear, white foamy head, taste is Carmel, malty, great pour in Hawaii. drseamus (103) - Troy, New York, USA - DEC 24, 2007
I had this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. Lavaman Red pours a predictable copper color that shines very nicely in the sun. The aroma is light and is primarily malty. The taste is heavily malty with a hint of chocolate in the background. There is a slight hop bitterness that helps to balance the malt. The beer is surprisingly light bodied for the maltiness but works well. Overall, I would say this is a great session beer.

Solid red ale here. Big malty nose and flavor catch my attention. Probably my favorite out of the 12 beer sampler I got at the brewery. Lots of caramel and lightly roasted malts, LOTS! Good stuff. carruthm (1401) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUL 10, 2008
solid amber ale, good reddish pour with okay head. lots of malt in the nose and some fruity/caramel aspects to the taste. zoucrew102 (1818) - - NOV 2, 2013
Tap at kona brewpub Honolulu. Caramel malt aroma with some hoppiness. Pours reddish amber colored with thin white head and good lacing. Caramel malt to start with some hoppiness. Finishes smooth and dry with a bit of chocolate malt.

5.7% ABV, 26 IBU.
As close to perfection in a red ale as I've seen recently.
Not outside the box, but executed perfectly.
Pours dark copper, with a complex aroma profile of specialty malts
and a light aromatic hop presence.
Crystal and caramel malts dominate the flavor, but an odd (not unpleasant)
"sweet potato" presence keeps things interesting: sweet with a full mouthfeel.
Low bitterness. pdx76 (651) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 14, 2014
On draught at kona - pours clear amber with lingering medium thick head. Nose of malt, wheat, and grass. Taste is of roasted malt, pine, and caramel. Nice red ale.
