Here’s another attempt at Kona Brewing, whose beautiful location is very nearly spoiled by the quality of the brews I’ve tried. The Wailua, boasting Hawaii’s incredible rain forests on its front label, begins with a headless pour and a light, dandelion yellow body. From this cheerfully colored beer comes a medley aroma of white grape juice, an old woman’s perfume, metal polish, sweet tarts, cherry Kool-Aid and cotton candy. I find it sweet, but not too sweet, with a few curious tastes giving the impression of a amusedly confused brew. Not bad so far. The flavor is weaker by far, though someone aided by a light and delicate body. My palate mostly catches a taste like bitter and inexpensive white wine with a tiny passion fruit and floral finish, but I remain unimpressed. The bulk of this beer belongs to that astringent and badly sweetened white wine flavor. So whereas I would love to have a bottle of this on Pali lookout, I can’t imagine ordering it anywhere else. ilovedarkbeer (2744) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - JUN 26, 2008
Nose is sour and sweet and somewhat stale. Pours an ugly golden color with almost no head. Tastes like cardboard, wheat, and a little bit of citrus. Gross aftertaste. Just not good. mhelgason (495) - Salem, Oregon, USA - JUN 25, 2008
bottle. small/average fizzy white head into not quite clear golden body. aromas of passion fruit? (a bit off putting to me) and light perfumey hops. this one was not for me. AmEricanbrew (6878) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - JUN 25, 2008
Clear golden with a frothy white head. Nice tart wheat, tropical fruit aroma. Smooth medium body. Surprising good taste is tart wheat with a prominent passion and red grapefruit. Nice fruit flavors here. markwise (5441) - North of Tampa, Florida, USA - JUN 24, 2008
This beer was pretty good. It was nice and refreshing, medium to light-bodied with a mild maltiness in the body and citrus, kiwi, and passion fruit (especially noticeable at the finish). Good and refreshing when the classics are not available.

Sampled at the Northern Virginia Summer BrewFest (2008). Maybe I have a soft spot for fruity beers. I thought this one was pretty fantastic. A decent wheat beer with a touch of citrus in the form of tropical passion fruit. Carl99Fan (187) - Suwanee, Georgia, USA - JUN 22, 2008
Enjoyed this summer brew on draught at Taco Mac in Suwanee GA. Citrusy, smooth, tasted very good on this hot day. Would have again. Cybercat (5962) - Georgia, USA - JUN 21, 2008
Pours a cloudy honey-yellow with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled white head. Aroma is strong and wheaty with a decided citrus component - but some of this may have come from the orange slice served with it. Flavor is wheaty and well-rounded with a citrus overtone. Lively, refreshing, smooth, an excellent summer brew. sleepylopes (318) - New York, USA - JUN 20, 2008
looks nice, hazy frosted yellow almost amber head looks nice and dies fast leaving a lot of lace. aroma is slightly metalic with some citrius notes light grain and perhaps some far of touch of hops. smooth wheat beer, and much less fruit than expected. yes its light, perhaps its a chick beer, but no doubt well done. a touch of passion fruit is apparent but not much more AleDrinker (1089) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - JUN 19, 2008
This is beer? On tap at the brewery in Kona. This is carbonated passion fruit juice. I like passion fruit a lot so this is a good thing. But I really wouldn’t call this a beer. Good nonetheless.
