Polished chestnut. Creamy off-white head. Pleasant nose of smoked breadcrust, candied fennel Spalt, lemon, ripe plum and a hint of melanoidins. Lush, very soft carbonation. Richly malty, beefy and bright with refined smoke underlined with a contrasting punch of sharp breadcrust. Delicate smoked hay notes exude from the rauch and pils malt interplay, as shy but bouncy melanoidins distantly loom. Splash of saliva-inducing plummy fruitiness emerges yet lends no unripe malt-hampering acids; just vibrant and succulent flesh to vivify the ripe melanoidins. Flourish of dryness and Spalt-derived herbality restore the deep toast and sturdy but clean smoked hay in the well-balanced finish. Compelling dunkel is another rare thing to find in Franconia, so this was quite a treat. No fizzy or thin body, and none of the cola-like sugars and lifeless, papery malt so commonly found in the style. Rather, this is delightfully hearty, soft, and rich, with an intriguing rauch dimension and commendable attention to detail given to the hops. Very nice. omhper (25167) - Tyresö, SWEDEN - JUL 15, 2015
Bottled, from Biershop Bayern. Mahogany colour, mid sized firm head. Nutty aroma with notes of pear and grass. Mid sweet with medium body and soft, somewhat oily mouthfeel. Velvetty nutty bready malt dominates. Drying finish with slight bitterness and hints of grass. Quality all the way in this relaxed, quaffable dunkel. jbrus (4990) - Delft, NETHERLANDS - JUL 11, 2003
Best of the Krautheimer beers I had until now. Caramel, light smoked, light hoppy aroma. Brown color, beige head, fair lace. Smokey, light sweet, caramel. Rather light for a dunkel. Long lasting hop and caramel aroma. Quack-Duck (9484) - Down South, GERMANY - FEB 16, 2011
bottle from Bierzwerg. Clear chestnut-brown colour, large off-white head. Malty base with hints of caramel, chocolate, plums and raisins, slightly fruity, with grassy-earthy hops. Well-rounded, a real pleasure. guzzler (76) - AE, GERMANY - JAN 23, 2003

Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is raisins, wood, some sweet malts and mild herbal notes as well as mild toast. Flavour is resiny, mild toasted notes, some slight burnt wet wood as well as some mild caramel and floral notes. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - APR 21, 2013
On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear, deep brown colored body with a nice reddish hue. Inch thick, creamy, light tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is lightly sweetened malts with some bready caramel notes, a light roast, and some dark fruit touches. Flavor is similar. A bit more of a roast note throughout with a nice, clean malt sweetness. Some caramel, bread, a few dark fruit hints, and a light bitterness. Finishes clean and a touch roasty with a nice sweetness before leaving a fairly lengthy aftertaste. Medium-light, smooth body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid dunkel. Clean and lightly sweetened malts with a balanced roast presence. Good one. 3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 23, 2014
From bottle dated best by February 2015. Clear cola brown body with a short off-white head.MoritzF (9901) - Ottobrunn, GERMANY - JUL 31, 2008
Mostly clean dark cola malt nose with a touch of char. Bready and toasty just enough but it still smells more like syrup than something directly coaxed from the grain. Medium body, low bitterness, medium-low acidity, soft and chewy, semi-sweet, a little savory, lightly smoke-y / meaty, some intensifying bread crust character in the finish. Interesting nose, goes between a 6 and 7 for me. The malt is a little simple and generic but the faint char / meat character gives it some life.
(bottle) Clear, amber colour with a medium-sized beige foamy head. Sweet toast-malty, almost a bit Bock-like aroma with hearty notes of caramel and traces of sugar beet. Sweet flavour, medium bodied with a smooth carbonation. Dark and toasted malty taste with caramel; medium-dry, sweet and slightly bitter toasted finish. Decent quality Dunkel (22.07.08). 50cl bottle, BBE 01/2012. Poured amber color with a thick, but quickly disappearing white head. Aroma has roasted malt, caramel and some metal notes. Flavor has roasted malt, more caramel and some hops. Quite dry finish. Paired well with a medium done steak.
