Gold to amber color. Strong earthy honey aroma, medium sweetness, honey dominates over the malt character. Pours a nice head. This mead is made from Michigan Star Thistle honey. Braggot is made from 2/3 honey and 1/3 malt. It required 1 year of aging for this mead to reach maturity. This Braggot will handle age beautifully. We recommend you try a bottle today and an aged one in a few more years. This mead is carbonated naturally in the bottle, so there will be a yeast sediment int he bottom. Recommended serving temperature is 50 F. This example is one of just a few Braggots available in the world.

My first mead. Semi dry. Taste of raisins and plums. A little barley wine like. A good mead.

Bottle (bottled in Oct 2014). Pours thick and brown with only a minimal head. Aromas of alcohol, rich malts, caramel malt, raisins. Taste is medium sweet, warming. Full bodied and thick with extremely soft carbonation. Drying, astringent finish. I am enjoying this one a lot more than I anticipated. Its a sipper. Good.

12 oz. bottle shared by Joe - thanks again, Joe! 2014 vintage, 12.8% ABV. Pours a mostly clear darkened gold color with some carbonation bubbles settling around the edge. Im surprised at the amount of banana Im getting from this, like a sweet bananas foster sort of thing, with honey and layers of toasted sugar, earth, wildflowers, subtle spices, and old wood. A little bit of a boozy warmth, but mostly sweet. Medium-plus bodied, with moderate carbonation. Seems older than it is. Not as good as other Kuhnhenn meads but worth checking out for sure.

Pour out of bottle, thanks Brandon! Dark reddish pour with slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of honey, caramel, toffee, slight orange peel, hints of vanilla. Taste was a mix of vanilla, slight booze, caramel, toffee, some honey and floral notes, orange peel, finishing sweet, slightly dry.

12oz bottle pours semi clear reddish brown with small head. Big raisin, caramel, dark fruit, bready malt, maple, some dark cherry, sweet. Thick and chewy, pretty tasty stuff.

12 ounce bottle at De Garde. 12.8%. Pours a hazy brown color with no head. A big sticky sweet nose. Apples, honey, sugary sweet base, dates, apple liquor, some brown sugar. Decadent. Smooth, light heat. Good.

Poured a dirty brown color with amber highlights with aromas of honey, sweetness; light clove, dirt and some earth. Flavors amber romance honey with some earth, sweet aftertaste nice abv flavor as well. Decent braggot not the worst out there but very drinkable.

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2015 Tap @ Kuhnhenn: 2013 vintage. Pours a dingy shade of brown with hints of ruby. Decent clarity overall, given the deep hue of the brew. Small, bubbly, gray & beige tinted foam barely blankets the top. Aroma has lots of stuff going on. Fruity esters, spicy Belgian yeast, Bubble-Yum, earthy staunch, white pepper, mild clove, a touch of musky, damp woodiness, faint citrus... Orange zest maybe? First sip has some alcohol heat to it. But still quite tame considering the 16% ABV listing. Notes of light citrus spritz, alcohol, honey, heavy esters, clove, rotten banana, toasted bread, thick mouth coating of yeast. More subtle hints of mint, plums, musty hops, herbal tea leaves, plums, & sherry coated black cherries arise as the braggot warms up. Dense, fairly heavy mouth feel with medium carbonation. Its a boozy & malty slow sipper, but a pretty good one at that.

330ml bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Slightly hazy deep brown color. No head. Sweet, malty, raisins, caramel in aroma. Malty, raisins, honey, sweet, roast, prunes, woody in taste. Liquid honey silkyness in aftertaste.

355ml bottle (ALEhouse, Riga)
Cap didnt look properly closed. Opened with barely a pfft, then again, if this is a mead there wont be any carbonation. Aroma is a pleasant sweet honey, but also has an over-aged papery barley wine aspect to it too. Deep reddy orange, flat and glassy. In the mouth its flat and very sweet. Theres some oxidised toffee-like malts, papery. Tons of sugar and honey. A bit messy. Not sure what a braggot should taste like, if this is a good example, then its an interesting style, but I prefer both barley wines and miod. Was it spoilt by an imperfect seal on the cap? Either way, its massively improved by a little splash of Old Monk rum - much more piratey!

2011th crafted bottle,
Pours more reddish that coppery with no top and no lasing. Aroma - first impression was like raspberry, caramel-candy malty quadrupel, no honey to me actually but maybe its just in my region there is no such wild or a special type of honey. It wasnt sugary at all to me. Flavour of course is sweet as ... very sweet, pungent on nose and astringent to tongue, alcohol is well hidden to me, very smooth, velvety palette, thick texture and average to full bodied, no to light dry finish. Very sweet fruit overall, indeed I feel that scotch ale as backbone. Quite sipping sample except you must share it with someone cause at the end of the 330ml bottle it becomes too annoying sweet.
