Opaque black beer, small tan head. Milky malt and a little sourness on the nose. Light palate, mild carbonation, slightly dry. Sweet and light dark malt. Aniseed, coca cola and a little chocolate. Some yeast. All joins up seamlessly in to quite a unique beer. Tasty dark treat!
Bottle thanks to FlandersNed! Pours black. Tan head. Nose/taste of black licorice, hops, black malt and cocoa. Creamy mouth feel. Slightly chalky finish. Medium body. Solid. brokensail (16689) - Dublin, California, USA - FEB 10, 2011
A: The pour is dark brown in color with a finger or so of tan head.
S: An intensely fruity nose to this beer. Lots of pineapple and fresh orange juice. There’s definitely alcohol present (and not surprising at 11%). The roast and chocolate notes are not as prevalent as in other beers of the style.
T: Very intense tropical fruit flavors to this beer. Pineapple, mango, papaya, grapefruit, and orange give an intense fruitiness and a mild sweetness. Not super bitter, but there is a nice bite to the beer. A mild roasted malt flavor and a bit citric feeling.
M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.
D: I personally found this to be a fantastic beer. An amazing fruitiness to it, just a little bit on the boozy side. Ratman197 (15616) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - JAN 20, 2012
Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of molasses, preune, toffee, earthiness and sherry. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of toffee, earthiness, prune, sherry and tobacco with a smooth warming lingering tobacco finish. Tmoney99 (15119) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - FEB 9, 2011
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured dark brown color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted dark fruit and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark fruit sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded almost a standout.

12oz bottle. Poured a black color with an off white head. Chocolate, some roast, and some earthiness. Not sure I would have guessed a Black IPA vs. a stout. Sammy (12995) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 1, 2011
I thought an understated imperial stout. Smelled roasty, very balck with brown head. Would pass as a very decent RIS. Not thick, but chocolate, rich malt.Mouthfeel average. Good drinkability. Perfect carbonation.Peter Chiado’s bottle from the brewery. deyholla (12583) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 9, 2011
Sampled from the tap at the 2010 Winter Solstice. Poured near black with a light brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had a slight pine note with dark grain and a bit of spice. Flavor began with some dark grains, a bit of spice and a bit of backing pine hop to round out the beer. BVery (11458) - Plymouth, Minnesota, USA - OCT 24, 2014
Bottle. Nice dark pour with a smaller head. Rich dark fruit to this. Damn near a sour. Very delicious. alexsdad06 (11223) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - JUL 29, 2011
12 oz. bottle shared with the group. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has earthy, resiny and citrus hops, roasted malts, chocolate and some alcohol. The flavor has a big dose of pine resin, roasted malts, chocolate, fruits and raisins. The alcohol is warming, but not part of the flavor. Call this what you want; black ipa, DIPA, American barley wine, I enjoyed this one. Extra marks because it wasn’t infected.
