Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Nose is cocoa, earth, grapefruit, pine, chocolate, booze, and yeast. Flavor is intense and eccentric: booze, chocolate, esters, pine, and some sweet citrus. Medium-bodied and hoppy. Thorpe429 (5035) - , Illinois, USA - APR 21, 2011
Bottle picked up by my mom at the Winter Solstice event. Served in a Cantillon tulip.
Pour brings a very dark beer with a single-finger light tan head that fades down into a thin collar quickly but leaves a good deal of lacing behind. The nose is a bit off with some cherry and oxidation. Not much of a hop component--maybe some earthy hops in the background. The taste is a bit dry and astringent with some cherry, dark fruits, sweet malt, and a bit of bitterness. Medium body with a dry, slightly-metallic finish. Not terribly drinkable. I would not want to have this again.

From Semibaked on BA - huge thanks! Really nice, extra-strong black IPA. Thick oily pour with a nice creamy tan head. Non-infected! The nose is just lovely, with pineapple and key lime and custard mixing it up with subtle roasts and some dry hops. Similar flavors abound in the big-bodied, smooth drinking beer, but very subtly integrated roasted malts float through to give this beer a really impressive blend of mellowed burnished qualities and bright energy. Terrific. jrob21 (3722) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - SEP 8, 2011
Bottle from Flandersned. Pours a deep auburn, brown with a low tan head. Roasty, licorice, raisin and slight bitterness in the flavor and finish. Aroma is a little grainy and grassy. Decent body and alcohol is hidden very well here. A bit of a grainy chalky finish on things. chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 30, 2011
Devoted ticker review. 12oz bottle poured into my Darkness glass...A very dark brown with amber on the fringes. A light tan head rises from the abyss to about two full fingers. Decent retention at first, then falls very quickly to leave to a small cap. Pretty good lacing...Astringent aroma, so harsh I cringe. Bready backbone that is accented with medicinal herbs, spices, and alcohol. Not a great combination at all...Taste is rough, burnt sugars, rubbing alcohol, and bad hops. The feel gives me esophageal burn and heart ache.
This is sadly one of the worst, actually probably the worst Kuhnhenn I’ve had. I concur with Alex’s assesment; unless your a nutty ticker like me, stay far away.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep garnet red-brown body, medium clumping light brown head. Nose of cocoa, berries, and piny hops. Rindy, oily body with spruce, fruity esters, and spice; quite sweet with notes of chocolate. Weird, but pretty good. tgncc (3135) - Bellmore, New York, USA - APR 18, 2011
Aroma is Chocolate, fruit, earthy. The appearance is black brown. The flavor is chocolate, sweet, earthy. Medium, slightly thick in body. The Finish is resiny hops. Good. Decent example of the style, even if it is more sweet than hoppy. Snojerk321 (2960) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 20, 2011
12oz bottle. Pours a very viscous motor oil black with a creamy tan head. Big nose of roasted malt, chocolate and pine needles. Very heavy on the palate, big roasty character, really coats the mouth. ucusty (2691) - raleigh, North Carolina, USA - FEB 11, 2011
Dark Amber pour with a thin off white head. Aroma is resinous, tropical fruit and strawberry. Bitter while being balanced. Lots of tropical fruit, pine and grapefruit. Little yeast Slipstream (2651) - USA - MAY 11, 2011
This wraps up my reviews from the RnH Kuhnhenn event. I got in around 20 ratings, and I still have a ways to go before I try everything these guys have done! This was probably my favorite of the night. A double black IPA, and a superb one too - wow! Unexpectedly sweet, with a roasty, tangy aroma. I tasted orange, cherry, sugars, and esters in with the hops. I totally concur with their description of it btw (above). I hope I don’t have to wait until the next eclipse to try this rich and mighty concoction again.
