This wraps up my reviews from the RnH Kuhnhenn event. I got in around 20 ratings, and I still have a ways to go before I try everything these guys have done! This was probably my favorite of the night. A double black IPA, and a superb one too - wow! Unexpectedly sweet, with a roasty, tangy aroma. I tasted orange, cherry, sugars, and esters in with the hops. I totally concur with their description of it btw (above). I hope I don’t have to wait until the next eclipse to try this rich and mighty concoction again. flatmatt (1608) - Northville, Michigan, USA - MAR 6, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is hops! Strong floral and pine notes. Flavor leads with the hops, pine, grapefruit, and floral notes, at first seeming like any old IPA other than its appearance. Coffee makes its presence known later on to complete the package. Great stuff. RyanMM (416) - Ferndale, Michigan, USA - SEP 27, 2015
Consumed on draft 2010, 2011 @ Kuhnhenn’s; 2010 bottles in 2014, 2015. Rating based off September 2015 tasting.
So, this is drinking really nicely. Amazing for a 5 year old hoppy ale. The 11%+ ABV definitely helps, but man is this stuff drinking smoothly. Dark fruit and the mildest amount of roast gives way to some lovely citrus and resiny hops and a touch of Belgian esters. Like a dark Belgian barleywine, almost. Still a good amount of carbonation and nice mouthfeel. There’s perhaps the tiniest fart of oxidation but that’s pretty acceptable for a 5+ year old beer. jredmond (8645) - New York, New York, USA - APR 27, 2011
Draft at RnH with Streets, Andrew, and Brendan during the Kuhnhenn Total Tap Takeover Event. Pours a pitch black body with off white lacing. Aroma is light. Mouthfeel is thick and rich with notes of rich caramel malts, fresh hops, and a touch of chocolate roast. JCB (3999) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - MAY 15, 2011
From Semibaked on BA - huge thanks! Really nice, extra-strong black IPA. Thick oily pour with a nice creamy tan head. Non-infected! The nose is just lovely, with pineapple and key lime and custard mixing it up with subtle roasts and some dry hops. Similar flavors abound in the big-bodied, smooth drinking beer, but very subtly integrated roasted malts float through to give this beer a really impressive blend of mellowed burnished qualities and bright energy. Terrific.

12oz bottle pours mahogany with deep copper edges and mocha head. The aroma is spicy hops, spicy yeast, cherries, some dark roastiness and a modest level of Belgian yeasty esters. The taste is complex to say the least and is a yummy sort of complexity that is a bit tough to put words to. I get some dark roasted malts, a thicket of citrus hops, some pine hop resin and then it becomes more and more spicy hop bitterness mixing with molasses. Different, complex, good. 11% BDIPA, so chill. Burnt malts, caramel sweetness, bright spicey hop, and some boozy notes. Snojerk321 (2984) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 20, 2011
12oz bottle. Pours a very viscous motor oil black with a creamy tan head. Big nose of roasted malt, chocolate and pine needles. Very heavy on the palate, big roasty character, really coats the mouth. alexsdad06 (10817) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - JUL 29, 2011
12 oz. bottle shared with the group. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has earthy, resiny and citrus hops, roasted malts, chocolate and some alcohol. The flavor has a big dose of pine resin, roasted malts, chocolate, fruits and raisins. The alcohol is warming, but not part of the flavor. Call this what you want; black ipa, DIPA, American barley wine, I enjoyed this one. Extra marks because it wasn’t infected. cubs (10714) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 20, 2013
Bottle @ home via trade with deyholla, I believe. Thanks! Pours a bit murky black appearance with a dark brown head. Chewy herbal yeasty, dark chocolate, somewhat spicy, minty/piney aroma that really has the house character of the Kuhnhenn yeast. Tangy, orange zesty, fairly citrusy, Belgian chocolate, chewy yeasty, minty, light toffee flavor. Honesty, this tastes pretty strong but is super smooth for the 11% abv. Also, pretty unbelievable that this has held up so well. I’ve had this bottle for near a year and god knows how long deyholla had it before me, but it’s still super tasty.
