12oz bottle. Poured a black color with an off white head. Chocolate, some roast, and some earthiness. Not sure I would have guessed a Black IPA vs. a stout.

Aroma is Chocolate, fruit, earthy. The appearance is black brown. The flavor is chocolate, sweet, earthy. Medium, slightly thick in body. The Finish is resiny hops. Good. Decent example of the style, even if it is more sweet than hoppy.

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Herbal and piney hoppy aroma with light roasted malts. The flavor has piney, earthy, and herbal hops, with roasted malts and a light sweetness. Not bad.

Bottle from Flandersned. Pours a deep auburn, brown with a low tan head. Roasty, licorice, raisin and slight bitterness in the flavor and finish. Aroma is a little grainy and grassy. Decent body and alcohol is hidden very well here. A bit of a grainy chalky finish on things.

From notes. First reviewed 1/12/2011. Served on tap at Kuhnhenn in a tulip. The appearance is mahogany all of the way through. A cream foam tan head stays with the beer for a minute, but fades to mostly a ring. Coffee, dark roasted malt, lots of herbal hops and pine resin, then more grapefruit and apricot citrus create the aroma. Definitely some hop presence here. The taste starts very sweet. Some molasses that were hidden from the aroma, and some cane sugar. Roasted malt and coffee provide the malt backbone. A bit of chocolate and then the taste suddenly changes and picks up some pine resin hoppiness, gaining steam and eventually revealing some grapefruit and apricot citrus as well. Finishes paradoxically sweet and bitter. There is a strong full body, sticky, with medium carbonation. A combination of the hops, alcohol, and carbonation leaves my tongue tingling. This is a little bit out there, but I enjoyed it. The sweetness will really prevent me from having more than one though.

12oz bottle, thanks to FlandersNed! Cap reads 11-10... 3 yr old Black IPA, we’ll see how this goes. Very dark brown, almost black color. Thin off-white, light brown head. Leaves plenty, thicker, dotty lace. Big body. Lightly sticky in the finish, light drying though. Smooth, lighter, lightly soft carbonation. Not too difficult to sip. This is surprisingly not bad, for the age, actually pretty tasty. Like a big black barleywine. Hop is pretty much just an earthy, lightly piney muddled character, but there’s a lot of good bitter taste to counter balance the malty sweetness. Very nice big heavy roast malt aroma that lasts long into the finish, some licorice, hint of dark chocolate. Solid imperial stout -like characteristics. Some bite in the finish if more than small sip is taken. Overall, better than expected, and a very interesting (and rare) experience that I’m happy to have had. Would have been interesting to try this fresh, though..

Draft. Very hoppy nose with some smoky roasted caramel. Black with an average tan head that left great lace. Flavor is medium sweet and very bitter. Palate is full bodied and oily soft carbonation. Overall a decent brew but way too hoppy for me to enjoy tonight. Didn’t end up finishing it.

I assumed this was an imperial stout the whole time it was sitting in my basement. Nose is cocoa powder, red berries, sweet vanilla, maybe a touch mushroomy. Mouth thankfully adds a hefty bitter quality to balance all the enormous sweet flavors. Actually pretty interesting mouth, sweet chocolate ad vanilla with bright hops, but that nose just lingers. Interesting. I probably should have opened this a few months ago, but still decent.

Bottle 355? ml
Aroma: strong nose, brown sugars , hefty hop hints , vineus feel , some buzz with mild funk.
Look: dark brown , murky look with lighter fizzy brown hue. 3-
Taste/palate: medium boied with fulle sides. Mint, chocolate , chewy mid...some floral meadow feel. Touch of spice with alcohol heat at end. Very late caramel and salt.
