Bottle generously shared by colonelforbin. Thanks Mike. Pours a dark reddish amber with a light tan head that settles to a ring and leaves some light lacing on the glass. The aroma is a light roastiness, some nuttiness, some alcohol, and some caramel. The taste is sweet with caramel and a light nutty note. The finish has a decent bitterness and is warming with alcohol. Low carbonation. Medium body.
Pours a dull rusty brown color with a thin veil of gaseous bubbles that fade quickly. Nose is earthy leather, bunrt sugar, composted fruit and a hint of booze. Palate follows with big boozy dark fruit that taste a bit rotten and unfocused. Some sticky caramel lingers behind the fruit and sweetens up the palate a bit but the overall beer is a bit flabby and unrefined for my ocular transgressions. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - FEB 12, 2015
Tap @ Kuhnhenn: 2011 vintage keg. Golden-amber body with modest clarity, topped with a thin white film that quickly disperses to a thin trace of foam around the edges. Aroma is relatively "light" considering the gravity of the beer itself. Notes of honey, clove, toffee, brown sugar, bread, yeasty esters, & plenty of residual sweetness notable. Flavor is much more amplified. Lots of alcoholic warmth up front, but what do you expect at 17.5% ABV? Flavors follow through with honey, caramel drizzle, brown sugar, & toffee. Warming brings forth some fruity counterpoints. Borderline tart apples, cherries & plums with a mild touch of dates & anise nearing the back-end, getting swept into a caramel apple & booze laden finish. Aroma has a nice, interesting malt aroma to it with some slight alcohol note and medium phenolic character. Some moderate caramel and toffee notes with some toasted bread and spicy rye-like notes.
Pours a somewhat clear, copper-amber with a thin slightly tan head that recedes quickly to the edges. Faint lacing and sheets of alcohol.
Flavor is fairly malt forward with caramel and toffee notes. Medium bitterness with some phenolic spice notes and alcohol spice in the finish. Finish has some harsh astringency from the spice and bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with low carbonation. Medium low astringency and low alcohol warmth.

Bottle share at Hampton Inn pre-DLD party. Pour is deep amber with an aggressive brown head. Aroma is of pure dark fruits - fig, apricot, raisin, and dates. Flavor also has a large amount of dark fruits but with caramel, toffee, vanilla, and booze added. Very drinkable for the ABV.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, Winter Solstice 2011 bottling. Pours hazy deep orange amber color with a 1 finger dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, apple, raisin, peach, plum, brown sugar, honey, floral, light pepper, and earthy yeast esters. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, peach, raisin, plum, apple, pepper, honey, light brown sugar, floral, spicy alcohol, wood, and earthy yeast esters. Good amount of earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, peach, light fruits, pepper, floral, honey, light brown sugar, spicy alcohol, wood, and earthy yeast esters. Very nice balance and complexity of malt and fruity flavors; with a good balance of bitterness and no cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a slick and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden for 17% with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barleywine. Nice balance and complexity of malt,hops, and fruity flavors; and very smooth to sip on considering this is 17%. Bottle as shown. Pour a dark brown with medium creamy tan head that lasts awhile leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is caramel and roast. 2011 Vintage .. . pours a murky deep ruby brown .. . medium head, lacing is alright .. . how can a beer be thin and still chewy? muddled plum, chocolate.. . not all that enjoyable .. . . this is a skeleton, this is bones!
