The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Malts and roastiness in the aroma. Pours a dark brown, but really quite a deep crimson amber when held to the light. Toffee and candy tones as brew approaches. Some fantastic maltiness with a sweet background that almost cloys, rides a fine line but manages to stay on the balanced side. Nice warming feeling down the back of the throat. A beautiful eisbock.

Bottle 33cl. Small head. Opaque chestnut to deep brown. Small head. Aroma: massive caramel, syrup, fruit jam. Full body. Complex taste. Rather sweet. Let it be. Caramel & toasted malts in their best shape. Additional nuts, dried fruit. No need for hops here. Perfect.

330ml bottle. Pours dark mahogany with a thin light brown head that disappears altogether. Very aromatic with raisins, molasses, sweet malt, gigs. Flavors are similar with dried fruits, syrup, molasses, brown sugar, Marsala. Rich texture. Sweet, though finishes somewhat dry. Love it.

Tap at Haus Wertheym, Frankfurt Altstadt. Pours chestnut brown with a lasting off-white to beige head. Aroma of light toasting, dark fruit, toffee, malt, molasses. prune, and raisin. Quite heavy sugary sweetness, low bitterness. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Decent example of one of my favourite styles.
