Drinking German beer is a pretty great way to get a glimpse into a brewing culture of stylistic rigidity and drinkable simplicity. Kulmbacher Mönchshof Schwarzbier definitely delivers on those fronts. Dark brown pour. The head isn’t huge, but it’s creamy and rich. Toasted bread aroma with just a hint of hops. For as dark as this brew pours, the roasted sensations rather easygoing. Definitely some bittersweet toast and smoke character, but it’s mild-mannered. Dark bread, nuts, and semisweet chocolate flavors. Just a bit of earthy, spicy hops near the end. Medium-bodied and smooth. For anyone wanting to learn about Schwarzbier this seems like a must-have. fdomig (996) - München, GERMANY - SEP 28, 2016
500ml on tap at El Patio Munich. Aroma is light coffee, malt. Appearance is cloudy brown/black with a fine and thick brown-ish foam. Taste is light sweet. Soft carbonation. Great. Myonlyvice (287) - DENMARK - SEP 22, 2016
Dark brown with a slightly tan head. This is almost purely malt and caramel. Very slight bitterness. A bit on the thin side, but very drinkable.

Bottle. Pours dark brown medium tan head. Aroma of sweet dark malt, chocolate, caramel, and hops. Medium-high sweet taste. Medium-light body, exceptionally creamy and smooth. Finishes clean with sweetness, roastiness, and some light hop profile. I really liked this one, another solid offering from Kulmbacher.

Dunkelbraun trüb mit beigem Schaum. Aromen sind Karamell und Milchschokolade. Das Bier ist leicht süß, der Hopfen spielt nur eine Nebenrolle. Gutes Dunkles! mmmbeer (1418) - Austin, Texas, USA - AUG 20, 2016
1 pint 9oz. bottle served in a shaker- poured a non transparent black when held to a light source, creamy off tan head formed 3mm in depth that laced very nicely upon the vessel. Aroma of a heavily roasted malt, with some dark chocolate and some nuts. Hits the mouth with an even medium body, malt was nicely roasted, some chocolate in the middle, finish is smooth, even, and delightful. Very nice! The beer has a nice look. The color of the beer is a nice dark brown, almost black. With a strong light, a ruby red glow can be seen. The beer is quite cloudy. On top of the beer a nice layer of soft light brown foam is formed. The bulk of the foam collapses, to leave a nice layer of creamy foam. The smell of the beer is nice. I smell lovely dark bitter roast aromas, together with a nice sweet smell of malts. The two are in good balance. They are accompanied by a nice almondy aroma. This combines good with the caramely bitter and sweet malts. The taste is good. There is a nice bitterness, balanced out by sweeter tones. The roasty aspect gives the beer a slight savory touch. It is in good balance. A lovely beer, like a Schwarzbier should be. phfyysik (1249) - Tartu, ESTONIA - AUG 9, 2016
Pours dark, almost black with medium beige head. Aroma is classical schwarzbier - creamy, caramel, burnt stuff, sourness, some smoke. Taste is creamy, sourish, bitter, some smoke, sweetness, caramel. Quite fulfilled with different tastes. Very good! jsporrer (982) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 7, 2016
Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head. Light carbonation with plenty of lacing. Nice aroma of roasted malts and a hint of sweet and tart notes. Extremely smooth, rich and lightly creamy. Nice roasted malt flavor. Very smooth finish with some lingering flavors. Very enjoyable. Better that Kostritzer IMHO.
