16.9oz bottle 9/22/12 (Binny’s Downers Grove)-42° in Mug-Pours black with a three finger off white head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Taste of the same with a bit more chocolate and coffee. This is a very good schwarz. Not usually my fav style but this is rather tasty.

First Schwarzbier I’v ever tried. 500ml bottle. Pours a dark coffee brown with a tan head. Kind of a dark Pils, lager type thing. Nose is slightly sweet bread, nutty roasted malt. Taste is similar with a slightly bitter finish. Very nice and I need to try more of this style.

Drinking German beer is a pretty great way to get a glimpse into a brewing culture of stylistic rigidity and drinkable simplicity. Kulmbacher Mönchshof Schwarzbier definitely delivers on those fronts. Dark brown pour. The head isn’t huge, but it’s creamy and rich. Toasted bread aroma with just a hint of hops. For as dark as this brew pours, the roasted sensations rather easygoing. Definitely some bittersweet toast and smoke character, but it’s mild-mannered. Dark bread, nuts, and semisweet chocolate flavors. Just a bit of earthy, spicy hops near the end. Medium-bodied and smooth. For anyone wanting to learn about Schwarzbier this seems like a must-have.
