Can from next to Shirahama station. No idea what to expect. Great hop and citrus on the nose and the hops stay around long enough for a good session beer.

33cl bottle served cold. Hop and grapefruit on the nose; citrus also on the tongue, along with some kumquat and rice paper. Not bad but a little too bubbly.

350ml can bought at Aeon Style in Whanpoa Garden, Hung Hom.

Clear amber orange colour; One finger head with crumpety off-white foam which lasted for 90 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with fizzy slight carbonation; Very fragrant aroma of Ale malt, with strong fresh grapefruits, yellow fruits, faint dark fruits, light caramel, light glutinous rice, floral, sugar, pine, resins, biscuits and grass; Mid to light sweet taste of Ale malt, with light caramel, red fruits, thin citrus, light floral, molasses, light spices, faint pine, light resins, strong dough, dry biscuits, fair lemon, medium bitter hops and grass; Medium body. Crisp and quite slick palate; Mouth Feel is good Ale maltyness in a thick background. Very doughty and Pils like with some red fruits and very low caramel. Hops are traces of grapefruits, touch of pine, light ooze and spice. Light floral and fair sweetness. Biscuity with fair lemon to round. Quite nice!... Hoppiness is fresh grapefruits, yellow fruits, floral, pine, resins, and grass; Thin citrus, light floral, light spices, light resins, fair lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness is fair and notable for a lasting, medium astringent doughty malty finish; Dry after taste. Light oozy and fairly bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one’s look, taste and feel is anything but a Brown Ale, more in line with the Blonde Ales brewed by the big boys like Suntory’s The Premium Malt Kaoru Ale, but with a lot more (mild) hoppiness and a decisive dry crisp taste. The black rice shows up as nice husky dessert aroma and doesn’t affects the palate at all. Overall a nice Japanese craft Blonde Ale and worth another visit!

PotjeBier (3351) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JAN 7, 2017
Can from 360 Liquor @ Shinjuku station. Clear orange color. Uneven and sticky off white head. Aroma: resinous, citrus. Retronasal it’s caramel malty, light citrus. Flavor is mostly neutral, a bit ale-fruity with light sweetness. Light bodied. Finish is just slightly dry with a hint of bitterness. Started out promising with the aroma, but the rest was disappointing.

Can from Foodshow in Shibuya. Nice light stone fruit and peach nose. Average carbonation with a medium body. Fairly clean and not as malt driven as many brown ales are in Japan. Nice, peppery bitterness on the finish. It’s OK, but not necessary by any means.

jinroh (1604) - ESTONIA - JAN 24, 2015
Yatagarasu beer - a three-legged giant crow that lead legendary first Emperor Jimmu of Japan from Kumano to Yamato. The creature is also pictured on the 350 ml can. I guess I got it from Takashimaya at Nagoya station. Pours nice clear amber with a frothy head that dissipates soon into a thin film. Aroma is fruity, light tropical hops, promising for a good and refreshing gulp. Taste has some malty sweetness, fruits and rather medium or even light body - that combined with nice hop balance makes it quite quaffable. I think it is actually my second time to try this beer and I seem to like it now more than the last time. Looking forward to the third time.

Nice tropical hops, peach, caramel. Fruity malt, apricot, pine, clean finish. A bit too simple overall, but a rare decent japanese hoppy brown ale

Bottle from Queens Plaza Beer and Wine January 2014. Solid brown ale with a deep brown colour and tan head. Slightly bitter finish.

hay, nuts, spruce, citrus, amber, clear, light sweetness, lightly bitter, light body, average carbonation. Interesting aroma, sweet citrus with some forest notes. Nice and clean tasting, quite hoppy and fruity. A bit too on-the-nose in terms of taste, if it were a bit more mellow this would be the kind of brew you’d have a hard time not cracking one after another.
