COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stronger, fuller flavored version of the classic bière de garde. The New York Times (your Paper of Record) just anointed this beer the ultimate bière de garde, and rightly so. It’s a rich, rare treat from one of France’s old guard craft breweries. Be there or be square.

Ruby color, thick, frothy white head. Cinnamon aroma, maybe cranberries too. Flavor of cinnamon, malt and alcohol. Light to medium body, liquorous texture. It’s good but I thought this was a belgian beer

Bue en bouteille de 75cl à la maison. Couleur ambrée très trouble peu de mousse et peu d’effervescence. Nez levure En bouche très sucrée et donc très ronde, peu de corpulence et ferreuse.

Tasted at PP bottle shop. Bottle brought by Logan. Thanks! Light amber yellow color. Fluffy white head. A hint of sweet. Easy to drink. A hint of skunk. Green bottle I think.

Sham (1844) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JAN 13, 2007
Dark mahogany, almost brown. Light, fluffy head and some lacing. Aroma is full of sweet malts. Brown sugar and dark fruit, like prunes. A little heat with a hint of bitter hops and some citrus. The flavor is comprised of bitter chocolate and cherries. Almost like a Queen Anne cherry, but nowhere near as sweet. I guess that makes it nothing like it at all. Shrug. Plenty of malts there. The palate is rather lackluster. Thin and watery, no weight behind it. The finish is dusty and dry of caramel malts and fruit.

Bottle. Low bitterness with lots of tannins. Acidic. Slightly smokey and woody.

Bottle shared by Blake. Clear brown body with a thin ring of white bubbles. Dusty limestone and light hops in the aroma. Brown malt and musty dry hops round out the flavor.

Pours a transparent reddish amber with a large white head and lots of lacing. Aroma of malt, yeast, spices and caramel. Flavors of malt, spices, fruits, nuts and caramel. This beer has a slight mustyness as well. I was not impressed with this one, especially at $15 a pop.

ditmier (1508) - Boise, Idaho, USA - DEC 8, 2008
Bottle at TFD - Pours a beautiful copper with a slight off white head...aroma is spicy, dried fruit, apples and fig...flavour is cider-esque, light but yeasty...fun to try...

I was very impressed with this one. Deep orange color with a lasting tan head. Cinimon and spice aroma that is not overwhelming and at perfect levels for a beer. Full bodied beer with gentle spice notes throughout the carmel malt flavor. Nice balance and very drinkable. Worth a second bottle.
