When we first made our smoked porter, it was great and interesting and complex and not nearly as good as our favorite which will remain nameless. We brewed a batch of this same beer last year and decided to take it in an entirely different direction. Instead of simply releasing it on draft, fresh, we decided to age it for a full year in thrice used Petit Syrah and Zinfandel barrels. Any fresher barrels and the oak would be absolutely dominating, but even after a year, this beer is restrained in vanillin. The resulting beer is ridiculously complex; notes of sherry, fermenting wine, tobacco and ever so subtle vanilla in the nose. The flavor reveals the oh-so complex oxidation that occurs in any barrel-aged beer, but is especially pronounced in a beer that has stayed in a barrel for a full year. Round it out with light cocoa, burnt raisins and Grandpas pipe? Maybe not for everybody, but fun, interesting and for sure different.
Beer is art.

Black hue with a thin light khaki colored ring of foam. Super interesting nose of wine Barrel Aged vanilla beans and smokey dark Stout malt. Crisp flavor thats a touch meaty and smokey but smooth and semisweet with kisses of vanilla and woody sherry, light tobacco undertones and a gently smokey black malty semisweet finish. Gentle and complex.

Bottle (Mar 3, 2017 bottling). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain), with light notes of smoke, vanilla, wood. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/oily texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic, lightly to moderately astringent. Remarkably simple aroma, especially given the description of the brewing/aging process...theres not much smoke and theres not much barrel character either. Nothing off or unpleasant there, but just not much to entice either. Its even less enjoyable in the mouth, though, where theres a surprisingly high amount of sourness, and more bitterness and astringency than one might desire in this sort of thing. The watery and somewhat slick/oily mouthfeel doesnt help matters either. I presume they were attempting to mimic Alaskans example (plus the barrel aging), and while that one isnt 4+, its at least cleaner and richer and more aromatic. This isnt horrible or anything, but its still a long way from enjoyable. My seventh and, for now, final attempt at trying to find a good brew from La Cumbre...the best I found was a 3.1, the worst a 2.0, so the QPR sadly isnt really there to continue. Hopefully the quality will improve over time, though, so Ill perhaps revisit in two or three years.

On tap at Hops & Pie. Black appearance with a light tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, smoked malt, caramel, vanilla, roasted grain and a mild earthiness. Similar flavor, adding moderate sweetness and a light bitterness. Medium body with a smooth, creamy feel. No Problemo!

Bomber. Smoke aroma with notes of cocoa, dark fruit, tobacco, oak and vanilla. Pours black with a thin light brown head that has little retention and excellent lacing. Starts with cocoa, dark fruit, and tobacco flavors. Finishes smooth with excellent smoke, vanilla and oak flavors. Great smoked porter.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of smoke, cocoa and a hint of fruitiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of cocoa, smoke and light earthiness with a smooth dry lingering smokey cocoa finish.

Un porter aminci par le vieillissement en barriques mais enrichi en complexit. La fume domine mais laisse vite la place une multitude de petits fruits rouge et dune facette vineuse toffe. Belle surprise.

Bottle @ Steves Foco. Thanks Steve. Pours a reddish brown, clear appearance with a brown head. Burnt chocolate, light smoke, light butterscotch, caramel, a touch meaty aroma. A little buttery. Twangy, burnt caramel, chocolate flavor. A little oily. First La Cumbre beer that I didnt like.

Bottle. wasnt aware it was barrel aged until the 1st sip. aroma is mild with light smoke and whiskey. wow, the barrel notes are very strong here. woody booze, and more booze. coffee in the finish and a lingering raisinish flavor. burnt notes emerge as it warms with more smoke coming forward. overall too boozey with too much barrel for me.

Beer #66 of NM 100. Body is a bit thin, and more carbonation than I would prefer. Nice subtle smoke. Some fruitiness that is good, but not my favorite.

[email protected] pours coffee black with thin tan head. This is the smoked the smoked porter w/o much smoke. Aged a year in wine barrels, this beer shows a nice vinous streak through its well-balanced structure. Overall, I would drop the "smoked" part of the name and go w/the flavors its showing.
