(Rating #5972)

My Bottom Line:
Leafy hops and their bitterness cut through alcohol heat in this simple and surprisingly unsweet Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam laces atop the misty reddish amber.
-Malts are surprisingly subdued, as are their residual sugars.
-Fruitiness is there throughout, but not backed up by too much caramel, strangely enough.
-This is not nearly as accomplished a recipe as their Scotch Ale or their Imperial Stout (to stay in the sipping category).

On tap at the brewpub.

In short: A toasted caramelized ale, a rich simple beer that is easy to drink.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Cloudy brown body topped by a dark amber topped by a small white head leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is simple sweet toasted caramelized malts, a straightforward simple sweet aroma. In mouth the beer is corpulent and it is supported by an adequate medium carbonatiohn. Taste is straightforward but effective. The beer is very toasted with flavors of crispy baguette crust, crunchy caramel, notes of red fruits jam, light wooden resinous hops presence and a light paper-like astringent sensation. I appreciated the corpulence and rich maltiness coming from this relatively low abv barley wine, but it lacked some complexity. A decent dessert beer. And I hate when we are in a brewpub and my wife asks me to hold her pink purse while she goes to the bathroom because I hate when someone sees me in a brewpub holding two pink purses.

On tap at brewpub. A veiled reddish amber with a short lived white head. Aroma is red candy, barley candy. Flavor is barley, sugar, caramel, brown sugar. And more sugar. Slightly herbal finish, with lingering sugar and molasses. Strong body, average carbonation. Solid.
