Draught at Ladyface Ales, Agoura Hills, California. Vintage 2011. Hazy copper beer with a nice lasting offwhite/yellowish head. Fruity vinous aroma, woody, raisins, caramel, some toffee. Enjoyed at gabf 2014. It pours with a nice looking copper body that supports a tall dark tan head. The aroma offers up lots of floral hop notes followed by a modest level of malt sweetness. The taste delivers a pretty tasty mix of sweet malts and hoppiness that seem sort of resiny and bitter floral hops as well as a bit of pine hops going on too. Tap at Lucky Baldwins. Clear deep tea red pour. Excellent webby tan lacing. Nose is dark fruits, sweet cherry and cherry cordial. Taste is spicy, quite hoppy with decent sap, resin, and verging astringent tea tannic bitterness. Maple and fermenting dark cherry give this a dessert feel though with aggressive bitterness for style. A tad to papery for me. Barrel tannins over the top.

Draft @ the brewpub. 2011 vintage. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy hoppy piney aroma with hints of dark fruit. Hazed dark amber/copper pour with a khaki head. Nose is sweet dark fruits, caramel, sugar, and a hint of alcohol. Minimal hop character to be expected for this aged keg, but still a hint of herbs and citrus peel. Some oak, a hint of vanilla, and a bit of wine. The flavor is quite sweet and fruit forward. Lots of raisin, cherry, and grape. Some light citrus and herbs, plenty of oak, a bit of vanilla, and some brown sugar. This was the Makers Mark barrel aged version. Quite the cola nose and initial flavor here. Doesn’t taste of 10% abv. Smooth with a little sparkle to this brown/orange hued beer. Quite unexpected tastes here. MilkOfTheOld (3) - - MAY 20, 2012 does not count
Variety I had was aged in Maker’s Mark cask. Strong grape flavor came through, and had constitution much like wine, thin compared to other beers but medium to thick compared to wines. A successful barleywine.
