Sampler-sized draft at LBC Black as road tar... no, that sounds unpleasant... well, black. A thin head owed partly to LBC’s lower carbonation levels across the line. A silky, creamy texture that does not mask the stout’s bitterness and a bit of driness. In other words, there are characteristics of nearly every kind of stout at work here. holdenn (2116) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 30, 2007
Sampled from a growler at DarkLord Day, thanks anonymous person. Pours a murky brown with a small head. Chocolate nose, not picking out much else. Light chocolate flavors with a smooth palate. Not very sweet for a sweet stout, and actually finishes a little dry ... but a decent stout none the less. cellardoor (45) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - AUG 29, 2007
Clean aroma, slight toasted malt on the nose. Very dark, with very very thin head. More bitterness than expected, lacked the smoothness/silkiness that I’d expect with this style. Perhaps reducing some of the darker grains and adding more oat (malt) could balance this more. Generally bitter throughout with some dark chocolate in the finish.
Overall it is a middle of the road oatmeal stout. . SpudClampDawg (1029) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - MAY 4, 2008
12 oz bottle: Deep black core with tan highlights and a thick brown head. Notes were light but present, mostly nuts and caramel. The body was even and balanced with chocolate, nuts, caramel and coffee. The oatiness was missing though. A well done brew that didn’t extend itself in any direction to warrant a second look. Solid but expected. BMan1113VR (7931) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUN 4, 2010
Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a small tan head over a brown body. Aroma of leather, chocolate, lactose and nutshells. Taste is bitter roasted malt, lactose, roasted nutshells, some smoke. Light bubbles.

Draft to taster at the brewpub. Looks solid; a translucent dark cola with thin very light beige head. Smells of dark malt, oats, and mild roast. Tastes like it smells with a somewhat bitter, silky medium-bodied mouthfeel. Not bad, but forgettable.
