A Unique Dry-Hopped Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale

We soured the wort on the Hot Side with Lactobacillus for a few days and then brewed up this smooth and hoppy sour. It tastes like a big bowl of fruity candy or some chewable flavored vitamins, but what’s the difference? It’s sweet, tart, and sassy, just like the tasty cherry pie that your favorite aunt makes. For all the Aunt Sally’s out there, You know who you are...

You remember it like it was yesterday. The beer flowed like music. The music was all that mattered. What mattered most was that nothing else mattered at all and the world outside fell away as a dream disappears upon waking, ephemeral and vaporous. You cradled her in your hand, lips trembling, her citrus suchness a swarm of expectation in your mind, her carbonate beauty as satisfying as it was overwhelming. You were new to this dance but she was not. Taking her in completely she seized your senses and you were consumed by the luminous passion, her residual sweetness, and the tart earthiness of her grin... This brew is dedicated to the real Aunt Sally. You know who you are. And you know why.

Pours clear straw color with a 1-finger white head. Fruity aroma, almost cider-like, with an earthy note. Medium body with a touch of oil. Finish is very dry. Flavor is sour, combining the yeast and light citrus. There is a touch of earthiness beneath the sour notes.

Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is some booze, piny hops, tart but not sour, slightly fruity, some lacto. Appearance is golden, off white head, clear. Taste is tart, wheat, pine, some fruit, some lacto, very refreshing. Mouthfeel is light body, light crisp carbonation, effervescent tart hoppy aftertaste. Overall, I wouldn't say this is great, but I could see myself crushing these tailgating. Easy to drink and very refreshing.

Hazy yellow gold pour with a good amount of lasting white foam. Modest hops. Modest sour. Not sure if those two elements are playing well together. Lemons. Sugar cane. Parsley. Artichoke. Overly carbonated. Feels like a dry-hopped Shandy. Not quite working for me.

Keg at the Euston Tap, West Lodge, 10/10/18. Clear golden with a decent off white cap. Nose is citric sherbets, lemon dab, straw, damp cloth, tarte fruits. Taste comprises on the turn melon, burnt citric edge, green berry must, grains, light funk layer, damp hay. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a sharp citric bite and hoppy back notes. Decent refreshing and easy drinking sour.

Bottle from matsons in Douglas, cork. Pours gold with white head. Big fruity hoppy aroma, pineapple, orange, slightly floral, tart. Lots of orange in flavour, also pineapple, lemon , grapefruit, tart, hint of caramel. The sour flavour isn't too overpowering and is just right for my taste. Great sour IPA with great flavour and aroma.

Pour is a dark orange with mild still appearance. Smell of light citrus, tart and sweet balanced bouquet. Taste is sour forward with apricot, stone fruit, maybe cherries and cream. Nice blend. Long residual orange taste

Keg at Euston Tap. It pours very lightly hazy golden with a medium foamy white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, fresh, tangy fruits, sour apple, zesty citrus and lime The taste is crisp, dry, tart, touch bitter, pithy lemon, granny smith apple, zesty, quite bright, lactic, tangy, pear skin, must, gooseberry, white grape skin and a touch of tannin with a drying and spritzy finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Bright and drinkable. A nice, approable sour.

Hazy gold color with a large rocky off-white head and great retention. Good lacing. Tastes like sour lemon pledge mixed with beer. Yuck. No redeeming value. Go away Aunt Sally! What is wrong with you? Why would anyone drink this on purpose instead of real beer?
