Long Island, NY - 12 oz. bottle poured a dark amber color with medium head and slight lacing. Aroma is hop heavy and anyone would assume this is a classic IPA. Taste is purely barleywine. Not much of a barleywine drinker but I was pleasantly surprised. Sweet wine tones with an immense hop presence, I could get used to this. ---Rated via RateBeer for iPhone
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Pours clear copper with a nice foamy head. Not too bubbly, not to velvety smooth in appearance, it's just right. Smell is very floral, with the perfect amount of alcohol vapors to let you know you are in for a good time. Taste is that of burnt sugar and hops, with a nice mild alcohol burn at the end.
Not too bitter, not too sweet, and a nice alcohol burn makes this beer one of my favorites. When I see Brown Shugga in stores, I know the holidays are near, and this beer helps bring the cheer. teamsale (297) - Washington, USA - OCT 21, 2017
Bottle pours a clear copper with a two finger tan head and abundant lacing. Aroma is a nasal clearing burnt sugar, toffee, and Christmas tree. Taste is a bit heavy and sweet, bitterness is fairly tame, alcohol is noticeable on the back end. Leaves a pleasant, bitter, lasting aftertaste. Itzjerm (3076) - Taft, Tennessee, USA - OCT 21, 2017
Really a triple IPA with a malty sweet back bone. Nice incredible head. Nice hoppy head. Very enjoyable. Balanced sweet malty.

Bottle (12oz). From the bottle. Try again. Tasted like a brown ale. Not as sweet as most barley wines. Lost of chocolate. Nice. I think I need to add. Little more. ghostbeer (241) - Nebraska, USA - JUN 23, 2017
Well balanced with malty sweetness with some hop bitterness. Warm, rich and satisfying. Not one that I would drink often, but very good for something a little different.

Pours clear light amber with an off white head.Nose is very typical of an american barley wine, with floral hops, a big sweet malt, and booze fighting for dominance. The malts win that battle on the palate with a lot of ripe fruits and breads on the flavor menu, though there’s still.plenty of hop bitterness to balance it out. Alcohol is heavily present but does not detract.Nice mistake, lagunitas. BeerRenter76 (1029) - Texas, USA - MAY 9, 2017
Originally rated on 1/2/2009. Brown shugga poured burnt copper body, not much carbonation or head to speak of. Aroma of hops with citrus and some floral notes. Flavors of carmel malts, nuts, brown sugar and a slightly bitter finish. Overall a pretty good beer. Cajun (539) - Lafayette, Louisiana, USA - APR 5, 2017
Bottle - Pours deep amber, white soapy head. Sweet, fruity, floral, bitter, dry, warming alcohol, spices. Seems different (than traditional barley wine). Still good. Kleg (384) - The Beach, Florida, USA - MAR 30, 2017
Hazy rust colored pour with a beige head and great retention. Great lacing. Not what I was expecting. Yes there is some sweetness of burnt sugar and dark molasses, but overall way too hoppy. The 9.84 ABV is fairly well hidden. Gorgosh (511) - SWEDEN - MAR 28, 2017
