4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma: Roasted malts with a nice mixture of blueberries aromas, very unique and lovely.
Appearance: Very dark black beer, thick rocky tan-colored head.
Taste: Mixture of complex roasted malts up front, followed by the spiciness of the rye, the bitterness of the hops, and the warmth of the alcohol all playing well together. Lots of flavoring hops in the finish: blueberries, apple pie, and citrus fruits.
Palate: The "strong ale" portion is prevalent in this beer from the rye, alcohol, and hop bitterness. Lighter body for such a dark beer, has the mouth feel of an IPA. Quick finish.
Overall: For what Lagunitas set out to do with their experimental series this beer hits the mark. This is something inspired by a black IPA, but it is much bigger. The spicy rye and interesting hop aromas really makes this a unique beer.

Draft at Lost Dog Cafe Dunn Loring. Poured a near black brown color with a medium sized tan head. Aroma was some smoke notes, herbal and some earthy malts. Pretty refreshing, a well balanced brew that reminded me of a black IPA more than anything else. Some chocolate, light pine hop. Enjoyable. GT (10000) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 11, 2013
