Ale Brewed with Coffee and then Aged in High West Whiskey Barrels.

This beer couldn’t have been done without the help from our friends at High West Distillery in Park City, UT and Chicago’s-own Metropolis Coffee. We brewed a rich, malty Imperial Stout with some of Metropolis’ Spice Island blend, then let it vintag-ize in High West Rye and Bourbon Barrels for up to 17 FREAKING MONTHS. It’s good to have friends!

Gifted bottle and not sure why I haven't rated this yet. Turbid black pour, heavy coffee, choc, oak in the nose. Tastes like a dense, High West Bourbon oak offering but perhaps a bit less dense and with more coffee and spice. Solid!

Glass, 4-ounce, draught, drunk at Lagunitas Chicago Taproom, savoured on May 12 2017; eye: dark brown with ruby reflections, opaque, ring of khaki head, slight lacing; nose: bourbon, woody, oak, vanilla, alcohol, chocolate, whisky; mouth: bourbon, woody, oak, vanilla, alcohol, whisky, alcohol warmth, light alcohol acridness, smooth finale in chocolate with presence of alcohol warmth, full body, below-average carbonation, more bitter than expected, mildly sweet, fleshy silky and alcoholic texture; overall: quite good

Draft to taster at The Pint Room (2016 vintage). Looks good; a lightly translucent dark cola with beige head. Smells of a nice balance of dark malt, dark chocolate, coffee, roast, oak, and a bit of vanilla. Tastes like it smells with a bitter and warming medium full-bodied mouthfeel. Could be smoother, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Black color. The aroma is lightly cheesy. Strong body, quite sweet, not much depth, dark caramel, some cheese again, hint of cherries, maraschino.
Good but a bit weird, not fully convincing.

Taps opaque coffee sable with a serviceable tan head. Aroma offers roast coffee, whisky, roast malt, woody and molasses tones. Flavor delivers roast malt, quality coffee, whisky, woody, molasses and chocolate tones for a singular stout. Mouthfeel presents thick body and lively fizz. Go high and west!

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2017 Sweet taste from Rye and chocolate. Coffee hits nicely on the back end. A very good Coffee Stout.

Bottle thanks to Niels. Pours almost black with a beige head. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, spicy barrel notes, caramel and slight dark fruits. Taste is sweet and sligt spicy with a decent amount of barrel, vanilla, chocolate and a lil bite from the alcohol. Solid indeed.

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2017 Pours coal black with tan head. Snifter glass. Smooth , rich, coffee , chocolate , malt. Boozy finish . Definite winner. They should produce this again.

Aromas of massive bourbon, aged malts, coffee rinds, coffee beans, dark malts, smoked charcoal, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, dark wort syrup, tree bark, burnt licorice, roasted barley, cigar smoke, campfire ash, burnt molasses, barrel wood and oak. Pours pitch black with a very thin mocha head and faint alcohol legs. Taste brings sharp dark chocolate, raw cacao, bitter coffee, roasted coffee beans, black licorice, dark roasted malts, thick malt oils and figs upfront. Immediately thereafter, immense bourbon, barrel wood, oak, aged dark malts, ashy malts, earth, mud, toasted caramel, vanilla and corn syrup assault the palate. Finishes very boozy with heavy residual coffee oils, bourbon, chocolate, oak, aged dark malts and a motor oil thickness. Overall, this is one massive bourbon stout boasting heavy and dark flavors with no remorse. I highly suggest seeking it out. Hands down the best Lagunitas beer.
