AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didnt have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga brewed, wed short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. Its a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. Its a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a Cereal Medley of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Pours a clear light gold with a modest head and great lacing. Aroma is amazing - pine & citrus, very pungent. Sweet, lightly spicy flavour gives way to enormous hop punch towards the end, with a lingering hop finish. Light pine, very present bitter orange - chinotto, perhaps. Moderate body with good carbonation. What a treat!

Brown Shugga Substitute Ale on the label. Pours a fairly big frothy off-white head and has a pale golden appearance. Lively carbonation. Some nice dirty lacing. Aromas of earthy and floral hops. Flavours are mostly on the hoppy side of things, oranges, resin, pineapple but also some notes of brown sugar which forms the sweeter side with hints of caramel. Well balanced between sweetness and bitterness though. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Very good.

The aroma is sweet maybe of cherry. The appearance is a honey gold with a medium white head. The taste is a little bitter but very nice the way it should be. Easy to drink and overall I liked it quite a bit.

Lagunitas self-ironic multi-grain ale, at In De Wildeman in Amsterdam. Off-white, thick and creamy, papery lacing head over a hazy, lightly peachy orange blonde beer. Aroma of lime peel, pomelo, green banana, unripe mango, gin, green peppercorns, bread crust, biscuit, guava, tonic water, cereals. Clean fruitiness in the mouth but rich in mango, green banana and even slight apple, strongish minerally carbonation, numbing a bit the smooth, full, biscuity and cereally maltiness, well-rounded with only subtle hints of velvety oats, soapy wheat and spicy rye - in fact overpowered by the wealth of aromatic, DIPA-like hoppiness, grapefruit peel- and green pepper-like, providing a long, drying bitterness; some warming alcohol in the very end. Nice beer in all, classically Californian Id say, but if you put four grains into your beer, they should be able to speak for themselves a bit more explicitly, and not be covered in an IPA hoppiness, no matter how attractive the latter is to all those geeks out there. But a nice beer, that is certain.
