AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didnt have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga brewed, wed short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. Its a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. Its a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a Cereal Medley of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

I suppose Im slightly lucky to have found the last remaining six-pack on Super Bowl Sunday. Honestly, I dont care so much for IPAs, but this one is exemplary of the style, and not disgustingly over-hopped.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2014 12 oz bottle served in a snifter. Pours an orange-amber color; fairly clear but with some sediment floating in the ale. {but a fresher sample had been very clear}. Has a small and weak head despite a rather vigorous pour.. Smell - I decanted the beer and was immediately hit by a powerful smell of hops ... This is no typical "winter ale". Instead, the aroma clearly indicates IPA or DIPA; and that,, of course, is what we have. Even so, the high level of pine-tinged, citrusy hop aroma is striking, and a bit formidable. but do not fear, the taste is largely tamed by the substantial multi-grain malt load. The rich and complex flavor really is both bitter and sweet; it does lack the bite or the challenging bitterness one might expect to find in an Ameri. IPA, particularly one with this level of hop aroma. Clearly, Lagunitas did a great job of selecting the quantity and variety of malts to go with the hops. And there are no dank or off tastes despite some earthiness in the aromatics. Higher ABV is well hidden. Very good (Medium-light) carbonation; medium body. Overall - superb DIPA. Powerful yet very pleasant and easy to drink. Excellent aftertaste. Well worth seeking out. Ive had the very good Brown Shugga this replaced and, as good as that is, this is better ... no apologies (even tongue in cheek) needed, Lagunitas!

12oz bottle. Pours a sparkling copper color with large foamy white head. Aroma is dominated by hoppiness, with mostly citrus notes. Powerful hoppy flavor. Smooth, slick bitter finish. This beer is as good as the story behind it.

6 pack from Chucks 85th. Pours bright golden orange with thick white head. Aroma is tart citrusy earthy hops with underlying sweetness. Taste is sweet lighter caramel malt followed by big fresh juicy hop flavors - grassy, grapefruit, and pine notes. Finishes cleanly bitter. Lots of hype around this one... and it passes the test. This is legitimately delicious. Kind of a de-tuned Stone Enjoy by... IPA. Easily the best Lagunitas Ive had, and thats saying something. They need to find room for this in the regular lineup.

From me, for an IPA to score this high is unprecedented. Not a big IPA fan usually do to the fact that the big name IPAs are too tart or sour. This IPA is perfectly balanced, giving it good grapefruit tartness, but no bitter beer face pucker at the end. Great fruity aroma without sweetness. Really nice break from the stouts that flood the market in winter.

Pine, citrus on both aroma and body. Solid hop backbone that hides the alcohol very well

Draft. Dank and hoppy the aroma is. The appearance is a clear burnt golden with a creamy, white head. The taste starts hoppy an stays that way through out. A little citrus twist takes place in the middle then a spiciness hits the tongue at the end. Pretty nice. Palate is bitter hoppy with a hint of the lagunitas dank. Overall, a good beer. Will prolly order again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear golden hue with a 2 finger off white head. Good retention and lots of sticky lace. Sinus clearing citrus hop aroma featuring grapefruit. Lots of pine resin as well. Bitter/sweet flavors with the hop bitterness perfectly balanced with malty sweetness. Full bodied with resinous tongue coating. Bitter, lingering finish.

Bottle pours dark gold fair head. Smells tastes of hops heavy. Pine. Some mango maybe. Has nice crisp bite. Spices. Sweet at first turning bitter. Its semi thin. Not bad at all lots of flavor. I can see why people like it but so much flavor I dont think Id like more then one at a time.
