AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Looks gorgeous. Golden honey-yellow color, light, very transparent. Head is slightly cream-colored but frothy. Smells of citrus and hops. Tastes sweet and fruity. Pineapple and grapefruit and a lot of it. Slight spice from the rye. Kind of sticky at the end though. Incredible aromatics from the hops balance things out at the end; maybe it could afford a little more?

Format: Bottle from Whole Foods, Redwood City
Appearance: Light orange amber
Aroma: Pine, floral hops, citrus rinds, marijuana
Taste: Pineapple, refreshing hoppy bitterness, oranges, some rye sharpness
Texture: Crisp with some resiny aftertaste
Overall: So light, refreshing, raw, bitter and rich at the same time... someone turn up the Cutty Ranks Sound System.

Nearly clear orange pour with a 1 finger, creamy, soapy white head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, cereal and citrus, fruity, floral and light tropical fruit hops. Flavor is nice toasty cereal and sweet malt up front, lots of citrus hops, straw, dull, doughy yeast, very faint medicinal notes and dirty minerality to the finish. Medium body, syrupy to chewy entry, medium, blanketing carbonation. Pretty good overall, a little syrupy and kind of simply, but tasty.

Pour is mostly clear orange amber with a fairly tight white head and strong lacing. Nose has a bit of caramel malt and notes of bread. The hops are citrusy and piney. Taste is balanced as well, sweeter caramel malt, bread is a bit lighter. Hops in back, more bright than the nose, lots of grapefruit and pineapple. Lighter body, strong carbonation, dry clean finish.

Pours unclear yellow golden. Medium, very creamy white head, fairly lasting with lace. Great, aromatic, hoppy aroma; super fruity, citrus, light pine, grapefruit especially, hint of peppery/spiciness, weedy. Flavor follows. Full body. Pulpy grapefruit. Great balance. Moderate sweetness and bitterness. Shockingly smooth and easy to drink. Smooth. Rounded. Great subtle rye. Soft and creamy. Awesome... Love it.

It smells so good, I just want to bathe in this. Very hoppy, grapefruit, citrus, some spices, citrus, a little pine. Taste is so smooth, citrus, grapefruit, pine. Light smooth finish. Super.

From a bottle. Awesome pine smell, gold color w/ nice foamy top. Hops hit you hard but finishes amazingly smooth. I’m new at this beer rating stuff but I suspect this one is hard to beat!

Draft at Caliente in Pittsburgh. First sips reveal strong hops and a mellow creaminess going down the throat. Plenty of complexities and a strong body, perhaps a little on the flat side. Not perfect, but close to excellent.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2014 On tap at Blackthorn Pub, Holly,MI...beautiful golden pour with white lacy head. I was in love at the first sip...bursting with a citrus grove and pine forest with each a distinct and awesome presence. This has an especially woody flavor that finished with a dry resinous bite. I have to have more!

GnarlyGnome (770) - Fairfield, Ohio, USA - FEB 8, 2014
Draft: pours golden orange with a foamy head. Aromas of grapefruit, citrus and caramel. Taste is wonderfully balanced, bitter hops playing side by side with a breadiness. Ckean finish... Tasty.
