AKA Holiday Ale
AKA Holiday Leftover Ale
AKA Brown Sugar Substitute

This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 8% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Poured 12oz bottle into an imperial pint glass. Honey color with a thin cloudy white head. Nice tropical aromas with hints of grapefruit and mangos. Nice balanced of hops and malt favors. The sourness adds to the complexity of this beer. This is an enjoyable beer but the only complaint is that this beer lacks holiday spirit. I guess that is why Lagunitas sucks ;)

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2018 1/17/18 Had with Abby just hanging out after a long nap. Poured from bottle. Medium amber with a 2-finger foamy head that settles but sticks around. Smell is huge piney hops with some floral character as well. Taste is aggressively hopped with pine and tropical fruit dominating. Quite bitter with some wheaty malt sweetness at the finish. Palate is medium/light with a tinge of sweetness at the end. Nice big complex finish. Overall, Lagunitas never disappoints. This is one of my favorite IPA’s.

Bottle 35,5 cl. As "Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale". Pours a clear golden with a creamy and lacing off-white head. Nose is sweet and fruity with some subtle, herbal hops. Body is thick, sweet and malty - fruity too. A vague perfumy whiff. Rather discreet bitterness. Almost gets a little cloying. 020118

Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is caramel, fruity, tropical fruit, pine, sweet, floral, some kind of candy I can't put my finger on. Appearance is golden amber, light tan head, clear. Taste is caramel, dry, pine, citrus, spice, not nearly as sweet or floral as the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, super bitter citrus rind caramel aftertaste. Overall, this one is pretty interesting.

Well, every once in awhile a beer has a perfect name, and indeed this one does-- Lagunitas Sucks-- not Lagunitas who makes mostly outstanding beers but this beer called 'Sucks' is my exact initial thought. Well that was my initial thought when I opened this beer. I picked up on the hops scent very quickly, and the taste was kinda like a muted IPA with unknown ingredients. Sucks was a perfect name for it. So bad, I let the beer sit and warm up for about 20 minutes! Sure enough, as the beer warmed up some, the taste got much better. Now it tastes more like an IPA, but with sweet components to it. Mouthful was very consistent, finishes clean and was not hard to drink at all. So maybe this beer doesn't suck!

Poors clear ocre with decent white, lasting head, tick lacing. Aroma very hoppy: resinous, some citrus. Some alcohol presence, not disturbing but this definately packs a punch. Taste hoppy at first, followed by some tasty malts, some bitterness, somewhat dry aftertaste. Very tasty malts but they are a bit overpowered by the hops. Maybe the hops kill the rich taste of the malts a bit. I prefer my hoppy ales less alcoholic.

Bottle from systembolaget. Amber color with off-white head. Aroma has caramel, rye, malt, hoppy elements. Taste is malty with quite long bitter and quite dry aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, rye, fruits, malt. Nice round mouth feeling.

Bottle from systembolaget, Östersund. A surprinsgly light beer in colour with a strong hoppy aroma. It plays very heavily on those musty hops of West coast beers. Delicious but not my favourite hops. If this is what they call 'failure' though, they can keep failing...

Light amber pour. Has a sweet aroma with notes of pine, barley and rye. Tastes of sweet rye bread, caramel malts with a resinous piney hop flavor. Bitter sweet dry finish. Genuinely enjoyed this offering. Definitely doesn't suck.
