Willett Whiskey Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

A Big, Dark, and Scary Barrel-Aged Beast

Our friends over at Kentucky’s own Willett Distillery have one kind of barrel: wood. And they put two things in them: Bourbon and Rye. We were fortunate enough to get some of their Rye barrels, and we put our Imperial Stout in them. It’s a chocolatey, coffee-y, smoky, Bourbon-y beast of a barrel-aged thing. Word.

Midnight black body beneath a thin tan head. Bourbon, oak, vanilla, and caramel aroma. Coffee is more pronounced in the flavor. Sweet but this is mellowed by the rye. Nice beer, even if a bit heavy on the bourbon.

On tap at The Pint Room (Littleton). Viscous black appearance with a light brown head. Aroma of bourbon, coffee, charred oak, dark chocolate, mild roast and light vanilla. Similar flavor, rich, dark and roasted with bourbon barrel complexities and a touch of smoke. Full body with a smooth feel and pleasant bittersweet finish. Nice.

Black pour under a thin light beige head. Big but interesting nose of tobacco and whiskey and oak and coffee and cocoa. Sumptuous flavor that’s layered and flavorful and lingers forever. Loads of sweet cocoa and wlearthy roasty tones with bourbon/whiskey, lots of oak, weed/tobacco, and lingering coffee and nutty java chocolaty touches on the lingering flavor. Amazing.

Draft to snifter at The Pint Room. Looks good; an opaque dull black with foamy beige. Smells of dark malt, chocolate, coffee, oak, vanilla, and a bit of bourbon and rye spice. Tastes like it smells, but less balanced and more bitter. Mouthfeel is medium-full to full-bodied and fairly bitter. Good, but smells more decadent and balanced than it tastes.

12 oz. bottle shared by TJ, spilt 2 ways. Thank you much. Pitch black color thin white head. Aroma is spicy rye, coffee, chocolate. The flavor is very nice: chocolate nuanced throughout, mild lasting coffee, spicy rye in the finish. Good body and texture has a dry oak. Well worth whatever a six pack cost!

Bottle. Pours inky black, medium creamy tan head, dissipates slowly with good retention and lacing. Aroma is fairly prominent rye whiskey, leather, cocoa, molasses, coffee. Flavor is light plus sweet, medium bitter, kinda boozy, restrained coffee. Fullish body. Pretty damn good for a commodity 12 oz bottle.

Bottle in Seattle. Tan head dissipating to a small ring with a very dark brown cola colored body. Boozy, coffee, rye aroma. Medium body. Nice spicy rye booziness in the body. Delicious, and incredible at the price. Light metallic smoke, dark cocoa, burnt coffee, rye bite. Very tasty and incredible for price.
