3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap at Maple Tree Inn, Blue Island, IL: Pours a clean, clear orange-gold sporting a white fluffy head. Lightly creamy texture opens with a touch of wheat, moderately robust citrusy hopping, and some sweet malty notes, honey, bread dough, and cut grass. Some passing resemblance to Gumballhead and Oberon. Fairly easy-drinking and refreshing, although the ABV is surprisingly high. Paired well with my soft-shell crab and bacon po’boy.

Draft. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate complex citrus hop and sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium balanced bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met. tmoreau (4369) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - JUL 7, 2011
On tap at Poor Phils in Oak Park, IL., and dispensed to a shaker with a clear, golden hue, and lasting, white head foam that left some etched-like curtains of lacing. The aroma was lagerish, with a bit of grain, a little lemon zest, mid-fruit, and sweetness. The flavor was persistent but mellow hop bitterness with nice balancing malt content in a medium body. The bitterness lingered into the finish, partnering up with some pleasant dryness. Crisp and clean. I was given some mixed signals on this one so I was glad that I finally tried it for myself. Draft at Lemon Tree, Downers Grove when it’s a humid 90° outside at the farmer’s market. I didn’t remember what style it was supposed to be, so I just guessed: A malty and spicy smell like a saison,or at least a farmhouse ferment temperature. Auburn color, with a few bubbles feeding a thin head. A little yeast in front of the first sip, but full of warm ale character. Guessing Cascade hops among other American varietals. Nice warming alcohol feel. Perhaps too rich for a hot day like today—good thing I’m in an air conditioned gourmet deli instead of a sweaty sports bar.

Draft at Jerry’s. Golden with big, foamy, white head / Bright nose of citrus and pine / Medium body, creamy and moderately sweet, with smooth hoppy balance and bitter finish / Flavors of orange peel, resin, grapefruit, passion fruit, and pine / Don’t know about the steam beer part, but this is lovely, elegant, and balanced American pale ale. 944play (418) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - JUN 21, 2011
Draft at Toad in the Hole. Clear deep gold, medium lasting frothy head and prodigious lacing. Beguiling Dentyne-breath, onion, and waffle cone aroma. Somewhat odd crunchy woody stuff and plasticky high-alpha hopness way up on the palate. Lager strain leaves its signature hole in the polysaccharide spectrum, which prints dissatisfyingly against the gonzo hop leaning. Interesting, but not going to start a revolution or even a trend. Draft at Fountainhead. What a strange beer this one was. Pours a very clear copper with a sticky white head. The nose is very tropical hops, some toasty malts and perhaps caramel. The nose is actually quite nice, the hops seem akin to Citra in their passionfruit and mango notes. On taste, it falls apart. Caramel dominates the flavor with toffee and biscuity malts coming across as well. Strong bitterness but not much in the way of hop flavor. This was such a strange beer and I didn’t care for it. fraternie (1011) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 17, 2011
Quite a refreshing summer brew, kind of a cross between an IPA and a wheat with more alcohol than either. There is a bready/ wheat note that is immediately evident over the pale golden body, which leads into a light citrus malt and an impressive hop profile. Medium length that grows a bit thin but still packs a decent enough punch.
