UPDATED: DEC 18, 2016 Saved a bottle from 2013... Massive aroma of treacle, molasses. Still Opaque black, coffee color. Flavor has migrated to slightly sour as the forward taste. Still has the licorice, coffee, dark roasted malts - these have become the subtle complexity. Viscosity remains impressive, an almost oily amber rim forms around the edge. Overall... did not age as well as some I have set aside, but very satisfying none-the-less.
2/7/13 - Aromas of chocolate, deep (not burnt) roasted malts, vanilla. Opaque black coffee in color with a thick dark tan head. Subsides but leaves a pretty rim of foam. Flavors of coffee, a dark but creamy chocolate (probably the cocoa nibs which have a distinct flavor); hints of licorice; dry finish. Creamy, appropriately thick on the palate, slightly oily. Overall, somewhat restrained and mellow compared to others; and not wildly complex. But great viscosity, mouthfeel; nice balance, sometimes restrained is good; very accessible.
Sent to me by Strykzone. Thanks Dave. Poured a viscous jet black, with a tan head. Moderate lacing. Nose of very dark chocolate, coffee, and dark friut. Full body. Flavor is the smelled chocolate and coffee, along with burnt malts, malt aroma with strong chocolate and coffee character. Hints of ash, the finish is long and bitter. Lot going on here. Pours viscous, jet black and completely opaque with a half finger mocha head that immediately settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.
Slightly smokey, roasted dark malt aroma with strong chocolate and coffee character. Hints of ash, charcoal and burnt toast followed by dark chocolate powder, used coffee grinds, oatmeal and licorice. I usually like smokey aroma but this smells more burnt than anything with a bit of chocolate.
On the lighter end of medium body with a blend of smoke, deeply roasted malt and sweet chocolate. Very dry and bitter but never becomes overly acrid with ash, burnt toast, oatmeal and stale coffee beans. This is countered by a much sweeter chocolate presence than anticipated. Hints of caramel, toffee, silky dessert like chocolate and lactose sugar. There’s also some licorice, dark fruit and boozy sweetness rounding things out in the finish. The high ABV is nicely masked and the sweetness in the finish make it easier to drink but its still a little heavy on the smoked/burnt malt for my liking. Bottle. Deep dark licorice and luscious chocolate nose. The aroma is as solid as any Impy stout I’ve had. Pitch black. Minimal head. Taste is a tad disappointing when compared to the aroma. March Ale Alpharetta. Age didn’t do this one too well. While the alcohol is nonexsistant, the rest of the umph of the stout has faded. Bits of cocoa, vanilla and some dark fruits remain, but it is a watered down and lacking the carbonation to carry the remaining flavors. 355 ml. Noire comme la nuit. Mousse brune crémeuse qui cherche la ténacité. Nez de chocolat, de gaufrette au caramel, de vanille rôtie avec un fond de tabac à pipe. Bottle. Oily near-black pour with a slow-to-form finely bubbled brown head. Aroma is very fudgey, chocolate liqueur, subtle coffee. Flavour is rich cocoa without being cloying or fake, some subtle vanilla sweetness, finishing with a distinct capsicum note. This greenpepper finish did not ease off, and if anything became more apparent as the beer went down. No hint of the cherries anywhere-- but I didn’t care, as this beer sat very well with me just the way it was. Best offering from Lakefront? Yep, I think for me it is! Even after having visited the brewery.
