I was lucky enough (I guess) to have tried the 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 all next to each other. Great variances in appearance among all of the "vintages." 1999: Yeasty smell and dark brown. Heavy alcohol nose. Cherry blossoms. CokeCola with some type of alcohol. Flat. 2000: Orange sugar candy like. Lighter apricot color. Tastes like burning. 2001: Nose is a blend of rubbing alcohol and adhesive strips. Caramel sweetness and an awful aftertaste. 2002: Realy light nose, some orange. More citric tastes than the others. Golden orange, slightly hazy. Foamy white head. Intricate patterns of lace. Thick malty aroma, slightly doughy with some earthy, citrusy hop notes. Incredibly intense fruity malts--apples, grapes, and melon. Thick, sticky, and sweet. This beer is a monster, far from perfect but grossly underrated. Drew (2470) - Kent, Ohio, USA - APR 27, 2003
I was really surprised at how bad this barley wine was. Why have I until now, never had a really horrible barley wine? Taste was mostly astringent - alcohol and metallic bitterness. Just short of disgusting. Artificial aroma, little to no head. Almost flat. Syrupy sweet and not worth drinking.

2000 Millenium mini-bottle: This beer poured a very cloudy gold amber color and formed a small bubbly white head that left trace lace as it quickly subsided. A small amount of carbonation and heavy amount of sediment is present. An aroma of malt, caramel, raisins and spices. A flavor of malt, caramel and raisins with a slight hint of the alcohol. The finish is a touch astrigent, yet sweet with the warming aspect of the alcohol present. Not a bad beer per se, but not a strong representation of this style. My tongue is frozen on a metal post...An idiot throws some alcohol on me to supposedly dislodge my poor appendage...Luckily, the post doesn't taste much : faint chemistry lab, mute caramel, devoid of any assertive flavor and aroma...Someone passes behind me with an orange I think...Is it me or spending half an hour with frostbite not that appealing? moderately malty (molasses, caramel, grain), with notes of alcohol,
acetone, sherry, and brown sugar. Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately
acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Strong alcohol and
chemical nose, muddy appearance with no head, sweet-n-sour flavor, and
somewhat thin/watery texture makes this one of the worst barleywines
I've ever had.
The color of dried apricots, pouring syrupy and headless,
this 6.3 oz Millenium
2000 bottle was just about the right size.
The primary aroma is doughy malt, but there is a definite woodsy freshness and a hint of lemon. Barely carbonated, with an oily, buttery mouthfeel, this brew does a nice job of balancing sweet, molasses-spiked maltiness with alleged 50 IBU bitterness. There is a distinct alcohol burn but I drink these types out of a brandy snifter anyway and was comfortable with it. This is a notch above what prior reviewers have said IMHO.
