Cask sample at Chicago Beer Society’s Day of the Living Ales, dispensed to my fest glass displaying a fairly clear, amber color, with a light layer of off white foam, a bit of syrupy coating, and spots of lacing. The nose was caramel sweetness, light toffee, a touch of dried fruit, and ready alcohol. Medium bodied, with low carbonation, and similar notes, the taste showed continued sweetness that might have been too cloying if not for the noticeably earthy bitterness, and strong but pleasant booziness. Dark caramel, copper color with a small, stable head of soft creamy bubbles. Floral hops float across a bed of sweet toasted malt and lightly fermented light fruit. Soft, slightly oily feel. Sweet start, with plenty of alcohol if held in the mouth too long. Over-ripe berries, toasted malt and distinct alcohol bite in the finish and linger. A bit hot. This might mellow over time. 2/14

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, slightly hazy dark brownish pour with thin khaki head, aroma brought notes of big brown sugar, cocoa, slight spice into a bit of yeast, slight oak into a bit of spice, grass. Taste was a mix of grass, bread, big toast and brown sugar into some hints of vanilla, some caramel, finishing sweet, slightly boozy. FestDecBeet (412) - - FEB 28, 2015
Look: pours a nice Amber. White head. Very clear.
Smell: caramel. Leather. Hot alcohol.
Taste: Apple skin. Caramel. Hot alcohol.
Feel: slight dryness. Very smooth.
Overall: nice beer. Needs some age. Not overly hoppy either.

[Bottle] Clear brown pour with a quickly receding white head. Nose of sticky caramel and toffee along with darker fruit notes. Flavors of fig, fruitcake, candied plums, toffee and mild earthy hops. Sweet finish. The alcohol is very well disguised. I didn’t realize the ABV was so high until after drinking it. Medium carbonation. The aroma is very sweet with caramel and somewhat like licorice with hints of butterscotch and earth. The appearance is hazy orange brown with no head. Translucent copper brown. No head. Somewhat stunted dried fruit (plums, raisins), cotton candy, and booze aroma. Smooth, creamy, and relatively thin for a barley wine. Initial taste is sweet raisins, plums, licorice, and caramel. Finish consists of the same flavours, but with an added hop and alcohol taste. Malt is present as well. Although not terrible, too sweet for my liking.
