Pure Milwaukee Genius Series 4: Black IPA - We took all the stuff people love about IPAs and gave this beer plenty of crystal and dark roasted malts. This dark coffee-colored beer pours a rocky, light tan head that leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. the hoppy pine and floral aromas ready your palate for an immediate bitterness. Instead, the sweet, caramely crystal malts blitz through, followed immediately by a sharp piney flavor from the Zeus and Cascade hops. The smooth body leaves a long lasting hoppy finish.

22 oz bottle pours an opaque dark brown with lasting tan head and good lacing. Smells like an IIPA with piney and floral hops. Flavor is almost that of a porter, with lots of roasted malts, dark chocolate, and a touch of coffee. Taste is initially on the sweet side, with the hops kicking in on the long, satisfying finish. Medium body and average carbonation with a slightly slick texture. Im glad to have tried this one. Very satisfying, although not the greatest Black IPA Ive had.

I try not to rate any IPA style beers because I really dont like hop predominant beers. I thought this would be a good one to try with the darker malts. Very good beer. Aroma is all hops but flavor is very malty and balanced with the hops. Glad I tried it. Good gateway hoppy beer for me?

Dark brown body, khaki head. Aroma is very intense with chocolate and surprising green hops. Very fresh for a black IPA. Flavour is really harsh, roasted and gold, lots of hoppy dark fruits. Nice and balanced.

Not bad. Poured at a good temperature with a decent tan head that lasts a little whie and good lace. Color is perhaps clear to slightly hazy depending on the width of the glass and a dark garnet. Aroma is hop, malt, dark ripe fruit, roast. Flavors somewhat like nose where I pick up those qualities, but also a whole set of complementary characteristics as well - a bit smoke, fairly dry, good carbonic tang, earth. Body is odd but good and carbonation is spot on. Finishis is like flavor, a little long and astringent.

Bottled date - Jan Wk2. Poured brown with a creamy tan head that left good lacing. Aroma of pine and floral. The flavor found floral and a roasted malt backing. Medium body with a light bitter and roasted malt aftertaste.

22oz bottle from Sadhana Wine Shop in Madison, WI. Pours a black body with an inch thick, creamy, light brown head that collapses slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is nice with lots of citrus pines and florals as well as some lightly sweet tropical fruits. Solid roastiness with some dryness to balance the sweetness and fruitiness of the hops. A light chocolate malt backing with some caramel as well. Flavor is big citrus pines and resins up front with some florals. Dry roasts blend nicely as the hops come out more with lots of grapefruits, pineapples, and some oranges. Florals grow as well with a light chocolate and caramel malt backing. Finishes roasty and dry with lots of citrus florals, pines, and resins. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-light body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice Black IPA. Lots of citrus florals and pine resins with a solid roast balance. Not a lot in the malt backing, but this was enjoyable.

650 ml bottle. From Brooklyn, NY. Courtesy of Brandman.
Dark brown almost black colour with big tan head. Nice hoppy aroma with fruitiness, dry liquorice, dark roasted malt and balancing sweetness. Delicious. Flavour is dark hops, bitterness, touch of coffee and roasted malt. Flavour is much more straight forward. Low carbonation.
