3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a large bottle purchased in Chicago into a tall pint glass. The beer had a thick dark color with a slight dark-brown hue and a big foamy-creamy dark tan head with good retention, and great cling and lacing. Its aroma featured a blend of earthy, floral, and pine hops, along with a mix of caramel malt, sugar, and light yeast. The taste was fairly grainy and bitter, but also had a toasty sweet caramel malt effect, and light notes of fruit. It was a fairly wet beer and was a touch creamy, with a smooth, filling mouthfeel, and average carbonation and fizz.
12 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits in Janesville, W, consumed a few minutes out of the fridge from a pint glass. Darkly translucent cola color, moderate to large creamy off-white head that lasts and lasts, thick stable lacing in the glass, a beauty...nose has some expected roastiness, but is dominated by pungent hops; piney, resinous, sweaty and some hints of grapefruit...flavor is - odd - lightly vinous and tart, chocolaty, little sweetness, certainly plenty of toasted malts, with a somewhat bitter, burnt finish with just a hint of caramel...full mouthfeel, low to moderate carbonation. I have my issues with this style generally, at least so far, but this is certainly one of the better examples I’ve had, pretty drinkable and interesting and more complex than most. oldrtybastrd (5002) - Fort Walton Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 13, 2016
Pours a deep dark orangish amber color. Aromas of big hop action, sweet malts, and more hops. Flavor has some caramel malty tastes with nice grapefruit and floral hop taste. ryanscourt (1473) - Latrobe, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 2, 2016
Served very cold and never really opened up. Light malt flavor with strong hop bitterness. Doesn’t gel to much for me. FROTHINGSLOSH (7796) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 22, 2015
Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a dark brown color with a orange highlights and a huge foamy beige head that lingered and left goo lacing. The aroma was bitter and roasty with floral and piney hops. The flavor was dryish and bitter with strong floral and fruity hops and a bit of caramel coloring bite. Long finish. Medium body. Pours coppery red color with a large head. Carboardy aroma, hoppiness is quite faint, caramel and malts. Flavor is also cardboardy and nutty dry, some licorice notes and tar. Sadly, feels very old.

Pours dark reddish brown with a foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, hints of grassy hops, berries, cardboard and stuffy notes. Taste is messy with hints of hops and loads of cardboard, stuffy berries and earthiness. Finish is mildly hoppy with some off flavors and cardboard. Something is not right here.
A nice sweet roasted malt aroma pokes through the creamy head. Not a big hop aroma bomb here, if that's your thing. A crisp finish with a nice bitterness lingering long after. This beer is a Nicky drinkable black ipa. My bottle may be a bit aged as there is almost zero hop aroma coming through. I'll try warming it a bit. 12 oz bottle from Tipsy’s. Black appearance with a lingering tan head and sticky lacing. Aroma of chocolate, citrus, caramel, pine, floral notes, roast and dark malts. Similar flavor, nicely balanced bittersweet flavor. Medium body with a roasty, mild bitter finish. Pretty solid overall. MarkSachon (1023) - Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 11, 2015
12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Nothing special here -- semi-admirable on taste but lacks the strength of a true black ale.
