Hazy dark brown hue, with a small beige head, yeasty, spicy, fruity bananaish nose with a wheaty, toasted, caramelized malt accent, with some good clovey, nutmeg, cinnamon-like notes, with some dark dried fruity esters of mainly raisins and plums, within subtle ripe apple skin aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, fruity, wheaty, toasty, character, with some bananas, caramelized ripe apples, figs, raisins and plums fruitiness, distinctive of a dunkel weizen, with a hint of cloves and nutmeg spiciness, a faint chocolatey praline accent, leading towards a malty, subtle acidic fruity finish. beerbuzzmontreal (3487) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 16, 2008
Pours a muddy brown color with a thin offwhite head. Interesting aroma of bananas, chocolate and cloves. Very good flavor of chocolate, bananas and cloves, there’s a mild toasty/ burned feeling too. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and gentle carbonation. Very well done. MartinT (10014) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 22, 2008
My Bottom Line:MurfDog (9) - Waterford, Michigan, USA - AUG 12, 2008 does not count
This round and supple Dunkel Weizen proffers plenty of clovey phenols and banana esters within a honeyed caramel maltiness. Its earthy yeast character is also prevalent, but is as sociable as other flavors.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the cloudy amber-tinged mud brown.
-Carbonation is relaxed and lets the malts and yeast express themselves fully.
-That earthy yeast character is looong.
-The level of residual sugars is a little higher than the usual Dunkel Weizen (in my experience), but it serves its purpose wonderfully.
-This textbook example of the style is exactly what I expected from L’Amère à Boire. Quality all around.
On tap at the brewpub.
Nicely done Dunkel Weiss which is hard to find in North America - reminded me very much of the Franziskaner I had in Stuttgart a couple of years ago. Light on the palate as any Weiss beer should be, but full-bodied roasted malt flavor (think of a blend between classsic Heffe Weissen and a good Nut Brown Ale). Thick and cloudy - typical for the unfiltered nature of this type. Very well done (but save room for a pint of the Stout Imperial).

A fairly straighforward, well made dunkelweizen - a lot of phenolic character and clove - medium tartness, followed by notes of chocolate-covered cherries and nuts - wheat is apparent in the finish, as tartness reenters the picture - gets sweeter as it warms, and gains a lot more fruit and spice complexity (overripe apples, nutmeg, etc.) - quite nice. Bu en fut (20 oz) sur place le 29/02/08. Brune caramel vaseuse, petit collet. Arome de blé bien malté, légèrement épicé et sucré. Goût de blé épicé sur le coup, pius suivi par du malte caramelisé suptile. Pas explosif en goût, mais bien agréable! Glouglouburp (6103) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 1, 2008
In short: Ripe bananas and all, this is a typical but superior Dunkel Weizen.Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - APR 3, 2011
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Cloudy orange-copper body with a little ring of foam
In long: Slightly toasted wheat, honeyed malts, a drop of caramel, lots of ripe bananas and cloves spiciness. Some dry grass in the finish. Medium carbonation. This beer basically covers the usual flavour spectrum of the style, however it does it better than most. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it since Dunkel Weizens is a style that usually turns me on about as much as a big burp during preliminaries.
Draft. Pours an amber body with an off white hea.d Furity body with pears, bananas, bubblegum, apricots. A malty caramel sweetness laced with raisins. A mild body with a light earth y finish. Pretty good.
