Lancaster Black is a classic, traditional stout reminiscent of the beer typically found in Lancashire during the 18th and 19th century. Black combines a complex taste with a rich and full body. At 4.6%, Black may be dark in appearance but is surprisingly crisp with a full bouquet of crisp fruits, spices and floral aromas. Brewed using a combination of Cascade and Challenger hops combined with Chocolate and Maris Otter malt, Black is a stout for the true connoisseur."

7 Lovely chocolatey and spicy aroma.
5 Jet black, lovely tight beige head.
6 Burnt and sharp retronasals, quite estery. Taste quite simple, mostly burntness dominated, and a bitterness that seems to be due to that burntness. However, its not thin on the malty body, and there are clearly some hops contributing too.
4 Smooth palate, crisp carbonation. The finish improves on the taste - here the hops come back out again. Whilst in the mouth theyre dominated by the burntness, where they can form vapours they themselves shine, so we have the aroma back again, with some lovely citrussy hops.
13 This is no jaw-dropper, but its certainly a very good stout. For a pasteurised bottle, its very good indeed. Right up there with Entire Stout, perhaps.

Bottle from Booths, Kirkby Lonsdale. Appearance - opaque black with an attractive fawn head. Nose - burnt toast, toffee, some honeycomb perhaps. Taste - liquorice, smoke, molasses, that kind of thing. Palate - close to medium bodied. The texture is both dry and creamy, if that makes sense. The finish is dry and crunchy. Overall - yep, good stout at session strength.

Think the brewer is very creative. This stout is kinda fresh and light, with a chocolate flavor at the end. Unlike other stout that are quite bitter and difficult to drink.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a strongly carbonated semi-opaque dark cola brown colored body. The weak aroma was of brown malty notes. The flavor contained notes of licorice and brown malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

Bottle. Brown color with a fairly thin, tight bubbled tan head. Darker malt and molasses aromas dominate. Hints of brown sugar and lactose are in the background. Sweet flavors, with a sweetened black coffee and dominance. The feel is a little too acidic, with a bit of 9V battery tingle on the tongue. A sour dough flavor in the finish. Linger has some coffee grounds and pale malt. Seems old school to me. 7/10

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2016 500ml bottle, chilled, poured into a pint glass. Aroma of bread, roasty, slight smokiness with a hint something sweet maybe raisin or dark berry. Minimal, lasting off white head, clear, looks pitch black, but dark red brown on close inspection. Sweet taste. Light body, thin with high carbonation. Interesting, if not overly complex finish maybe hint of chocolate which disapates to a dry bitterness.

Bottle shared at Leightons place. 25/08/2015. From ASDA. Chestnut brown coloured pour with reddy hues with a big frothy cream head. Aroma is nut roast, oyster salty notes, black malt, malt extract. Some meaty notes. Flavour is composed of drying black malts, dried malt extract, raisin, nutty and some dried fruits. Palate is highish carbonation, low body, watery. Ok, not much to it.

Bottle share at Leightons, thanks to Fergus. 4.5% BB Nov 2016. Very very dark red, pretty much black, small foamy off-white head, light lacing. Aroma is mostly sweet toffee, treacle, malts and burnt coffee. Body is light, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is very simple, demerara, dark biscuits, touch of cranberry. A bit watery for my liking, but fine.

Bottle thanks to Fergus. It pours clear deep brown with a decent off - white head. The nose is toasty, earthy roast, mild berry sweetness, touch of plastic and light spice. The taste is bitter, toasty, watery, weak roast, pepper, light ashy charred character and a touch of astringency with a dry, numbing finish. Light - medium body and fine carbonation. A bit weak and washy-washy. So-so.
