Marstonlad (860) - Helsinki, FINLAND - APR 6, 2014
Pours light brown with a medium-sized white head. Aroma displays similar grainy, papery maltiness than most bulk brews, very simple and one-dimensional. Taste is light sweet, malty: it has notes of caramel, bread and a hint of nuts. Hoppiness is mild to non-existant. Light, a bit watery palate. All in all, this was even a bit better than expected. Light and simple but not bad like the regular Lapin Kulta.

Head was little stronger but also flattened after couple of minutes. No lacing on the glass. Color is not what a dark lager is supposed to be. Its amber. Smell is maltier actually, but mostly this sweet malty flavour that you smell from kali, rootbeer, kvass or kalja. So not a good character for beer. Mouthfeel, well nothing just watered down massproduction that obeys te Finnish alcohol laws with 4,6% vol max alcohol. Hops??? well lets not even go there. If I had not paid 1.18 for 350 ml bottle I would pour it down the drain and forget about it. Keep the bottles, they might be worth a fortune one day as an attempt to make microbrew by a big company.

Bottle. OK, Im totally not going to drink this beer at 18 degrees Celsius as the label suggests because its a pale lager. In my mind "Dark Lager" always stands for a Dunkel or a Czech style dark lager and this isnt even a Vienna. Instead it has a deep golden body which is most likely achieved by using caramel. The beers weak aroma has something sweet and bready. Taste is similar to regular Lapin Kulta with a dash of caramel. Its a lifeless pale lager and not "dark" by any measure. So beware!
