Aroma of caramel, bourbon, roasted malt, and some citrus. Pours a deep red, almost brown with a thin long lasting off white head. Taste is loaded with malt, pine, with a little citrus and caramel. A nice bitter finish. slowrunner77 (13206) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 5, 2014
"pours dark brown...little light gets through. very hoppy nose up front followed by rosted malt. feel is ok...a bit carbonated and a touch thin. flavor is pretty unique, even for a black ipa. it reminds me (slightly) of stone’s 13th av. ale, but like a redheaded stepchild, not really kin. but theres a weird spicy hop flavor not present in the aroma, it’s a bit weird but works with the heavy malt. finishes dry."

A good beer, but for the style, just above average. The problem is that this is too unbalanced. The malty notes strain to gain prominance, and there is very little roastiness that I come to expect from this style. a_sully (457) - - JUL 23, 2014
Deep crimson brown verging on black. Light white head. Aroma of hops, flavour of chocolate hops and aftertaste of pine.

Bottle. Pours clear deep ruby amber with a medium beige head, creamy with nice lacing. Certainly the lightest black IPA I have poured to date, and noticeably out of character with the other reviews. Hmmmm. Aroma is cardboard forward, not a great sign, notes of carmel and pine, plus a bit of roast. Flavor unfortunately follows, medium sweet, medium bitter, roasty, caramel, pine, cardboard. Medium body, harsh bitter finish. After rating I noticed a tiny little hard to read brewed on date of 2/18/14, which may explain things. Kudos for dating, but lets shoot for legibility next time please?

Big bottle. Massive slowly exploding beige foam head. Honey, spice, cacao malts and a yeasty, almost brett funk which was odd on this one. An interesting black IPA. Bulk_Carrier (6064) - Vermont, USA - JUN 1, 2014
Reviewed from notes and I received this in a trade.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice jet black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that must have sat there for a good minute before it decided to even make an effort to dissipate. The lacing was a nice spiderwebbed show in its entirety.
The smell was such a nice allocation of roasted dark malts to coffee tones to the citrusy hops - all combined and leading into a nice satisfying aroma.
The taste was exceptionally balanced between the citrus hops to the roasted coffee tones to the roasted dark malts. There was a nice citrus/coffee aftertaste and a long dry bitter coffee finish.
On the palate, it sat about a medium in body and tried to show somewhat of a sessionable quality about it, however, I found it to be more of a sipper. The carbonation was fairly smooth and was mainly good for the style.
Overall, in my opinion, this was a nicely done American Black Ale, well worthy of having again. Beergeek23322 (2602) - Chester, Virginia, USA - MAY 12, 2014
5/12/2014. 22 oz bottle. Black with a tan head. Malty aromas with citrus, pine and lots of hops. Nice balance, robust and clean beer. Learninbeer (671) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - APR 5, 2014
The aroma is a bit hops and some malts, bread, chocolate and spruce. Pours a black with a slight red hint with a big creamy head and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter and a slight umami. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation a touch flat and the finish abrupt. Overall I felt it came up lacking, not enough hops and a little too much of the malts, the combination wasn’t good. dukeofunk (2) - Thousand Oaks, California, USA - MAR 26, 2014 does not count
Complex yet simple. Hoppy and happy.roasty, caramel, citrus, herbs, earthy, alcohol, vanilla,
