UPDATED: OCT 7, 2011 In short: Toasted grainy semi-sweet cookies and timid hopping. Meh.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear dark golden body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is toasted semi-sweet malts and very light hoppy notes with humid basement sensation. Taste has a lot of grainy toasted cookies, some toasted white and brown sugar, some crunchy caramel, some dry toasted bread crumbs, some barley candies, some timid leafy hops presence. The timid hopping is overwhelmed by the beer residual sugars, this is too sugary sweet for a pale ale. Actually quite similar to their own ESB (Esbrouffe) except that La Grande Barbue is sweeter and less hoppy. The first time I had this beer was when visiting the family (I’m from Rimouski) after coming back from trip in Europe. Let me tell you that I preferred to visit the old continent than to visit the old incontinent.

My Bottom Line:
Caramel malts, grape juice and earthy hops combine in this balanced, soft Pale Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles th cloudy dark amber.
-Carbonation is rather low and the mouthfeel could use some tightening up to increase drinkability.
-Hops offer subtle orangey touches.
-Once again, the Frontenac malt character is simply not harmonious with all ingredients out there and the stubbornness of some brewers to use it in almost every brew disappoints me.

On tap at the brewpub.

Part of the tasting tray at the brewpub. Dark golden amber. Aroma of bread crusts and light peaches. Flavour is surprisingly toasty. Finish is mildly bitter. More of an English style pale ale, but very tasty.

(Rating #2871)
