Cloudy amber, her miniscule head fades into a paper-thin film. I don’t need to delve too deep into her nose to discover musty wood, a generous helping of floral and herbal esters, tree leaves and dry grass, orange and apple skins. Different yet intriguing nonetheless, my first quaff is of medium-light weight while dry grass and apple skins immediately make themselves at home atop my tastebuds. Dominantly bitter-dry, my palate follows suit. Very little to no discernable malt sweetness, I stumble across some apples in the form of saucy juice in the middle along with some pineapple. Her subtle fruits having had time to play, they quickly step aside to allow apple skins, more dry grass and dry wood to further the drying of my palate. Not bad in any sense but definitely different than what I was expecting for an IPA, origin aside. Flowers and herbs tinge my breath and I am right back to the star of this show: dry bitterness. A few more sips and that be all she wrote.

Certainly not what I was expecting, but at least she was interesting in a tastefully different way which did not end in a drain pour. Whether or not I would quantify her as an IPA…I’ll leave that to the picky stylists. Unfortunately, she was overall rather forgettable.

Bouteille 500 ml. 5.5%.

Pours amber/maroon, slightly hazy. Beige head. Aroma is somewhat yeast heavy (for IPA’s, anyways), with some caramel, nuts and grass. Taste is grassy, with some vegetables. Sweet malts as well. Slight apple taste coming from the yeast. Not what I like from IPA’s, but those makes an interesting style exercise. Weak finish, especially for an IPA. Frankly, I was disappointed, though it was nice to taste a non-cascade IPA.

500mL bottle from Trappe Fromage. Pours a nice hazy amber with a smal khaki head. Aroma is mainly malty, sweet caramalt, apples, that weird Quebecois candy element, not much else. Flavour actually has some hops, mixed in with a lot of sweetness. Not a mess and not bad, but where’s the rest of the hops? I get some bitterness in the finish, but I’m starting to see some disturbing patterns in these Quebec IPA’s. Mostly malt and esters, featuring hops in a brief cameo performance. Dryness is really from the yeast. Feels decent though, I like the natural carbonation thing and it’s still a tasty beer, just could do with more generous hopping in the brewing process. Cool bottle label.

500ml. bottle from Peluso. The color is amber with a thin off white head. The aroma or lack of it is hops. The taste also of hops, citrus fruits ,herbs and some malt. The finish is weak not enough bitterness for an I.P.A.

Damico (3150) - Royersford, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 13, 2010
UPDATED: MAR 23, 2010 There is a sweet malty aroma with hops overall dominating. There is a nice head with a clean ruby amber color. The IPA flavor is subtle in comparison to an American microbrew, but the flavor of sweet and bitter clean malts/hops shine through. Not flavored as the Canadian IPA norm tastes, but still hints of it.
