Dark with plenty of aroma and bitterness. Fairly strong. The bottles condition well and the drink seems to improve further with time in the bottle. DruncanVeasey (8426) - Nr NUNEATON, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - MAY 22, 2013
750ml from Arden Wines. Good-looking ruby pour without explosions; forms a dense, uneven beige head and keeps it. Mellow, subtly roasted aroma like plain chocolate digestive biscuits with a locust bean/carob back note. That taste with a likeable soft lactic chocolate character; underpinning roast and black tea bitterness; grilled pepper and subtle dankness adding a layer of complexity. Really good like a blend of a schwarzbier/black lager with a dank English mild or stout. Might have to rethink one or two of my prejudices about French beer.... bhensonb (15969) - Woodland, California, USA - JUL 1, 2013
750 c&c from Wine and Cheese in Clayton, MO. Aroma is smooth and malty with a hint of chocolate. Med body or better. Mild carb. Flavor is malt, very light chocolate, wood, light noble hop. It comes together very well in a slightly musty way. Gets very woodily astringent. Excellent ale. rauchbier (3949) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - JAN 21, 2002
UPDATED: SEP 17, 2003 Strange mix of Biere de Garde and English real ale. Very hoppy in aroma and flavour but with a buttery malt background, deep red brown in colour with low condition and a dry finish. Comes in a 750ml corked bottle like a Biere de Garde and is bottle conditioned. bierkoning (13813) - La Tropica/Doarp, NETHERLANDS - MAY 22, 2007
75 cl, from the brewery. Deep dark brown color, thin but persistant foamy head. Malt, toffee and a hint of licorice in the aroma. Malty, salty flavor (Maris otter malt?) with laurel, caramel and licorice. Long salty aftertaste. Very British, very well made and not without complexity, just a tad thin, maybe.

Pours deep brown into a tulip. Off-white head with little retention recedes to mottle surface leaving spot lacing. Dark pit fruit and caramel aromas. Dry with sweet caramel, nuts and bread upfront turning to mild mocha in the lasting finish. Spiesy (2337) - Sydney, Greater London, AUSTRALIA - JAN 1, 2005

Deep amber almost brown colour. Dense appearance with juiciness and richness. Spicy malt flavour with mature hop complexity. Nice but too strong to be session beer.
Rich, muddy brown hue with a tight, creamy head. Strong chocolate, light molasses and iced (sweetened) coffee hit the nose first, along with a mineral twang. Flavour begins lightly sweet with soft chocolate, turns sour like lemons towards the middle and finishes with herbal and coffee tastes. The finish is notably dry and mineral rich. Medium to full bodied with a velvety texture and lively carbonation. Raspberries somewhat replace the sharp lemon flavours as the beer gains warmth. Bottle. DØE Tasting, French beer. Pours a clear and dark copper beer with a beige/offwhite head. The aroma is malt and caramel. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is sweet with some bitterness. Overall a good beer with a little better balance in the flavor. Christian (13930) - Odense, DENMARK - DEC 15, 2010
Dark amber with a lasting off-white head. Big malty aroma with caramel and some dried fruit. Sweet malty flavour with dried fruit and herbal hops, and a touch of chocolate
